Every time The Midnight Echo tried to wrap up, the crowd chanted for one more song. It was already past the time I had paid for, but even the band had decided to keep performing.
While holding Harper by the waist, she had been staring right into my eyes most of the time, but at that moment, she glanced to the left and suddenly laughed mid–spin.
She had been laughing while enjoying the music and dancing with me, but that seemed different and I just had to ask.
“What?”
She tilted her head towards the left side of the lawn.
I looked over and saw Ella dancing with Adrian like no one existed and she was smiling up at him in a way I had never seen before.
“She’s never blushed that hard for as long as I’ve known her,” Harper said with a grin.
“He’s fully won her over. Just like I will when it comes to you,” I confidently added.
I didn’t expect her to agree with me or anything, which was why when she looked back at me with those raised eyebrows, like she’d like to see it happen, I just guided her chin for a kiss.
The crowd finally gave it a rest when they got tired of dancing and it was then that the band finished what seemed like their last song. Everybody just stood there for a while, chanting their name.
Before the crowd could stop, Ella rushed to the stage and reached for one of the mics, standing center stage and right next to the lead singer. She was beaming and I couldn’t tell if it was because of him or because of Adrian.
“Okay!” she said breathlessly. “It’s time for cake!”
The crowd cheered again and then, out from the side doors walked a word–class chef who was instantly recognizable. The crowd gasped and called out his name in disbelief. Even Harper froze.
“No fucking way!” someone whispered from the crowd.
Behind the chef, staff carefully rolled out the cake which had five tiers. It had white frosting with deep red details that cascaded down on one side like that was painted silk. It also had some fresh roses placed perfectly along the edges, just as I had requested.
The chef wished Harper a happy birthday, they took a few pictures and he had to leave right away as he had a flight to catch.
Afterwards, everyone quickly gathered around the cake, forming a circle.
Harper looked almost overwhelmed as she held the knife and she couldn’t wipe the simile off her face.
Closing her eyes to make a wish, she blew the candles, then cut the cake.
I took the first slice and held it up to her lips. “For the birthday girl”
Her lips curved into a soft smile and she parted her lips, looking right into my eyes as she let me feed her the first bite.
Then, she took a piece and fed me the same way, laughing when a bit of frosting got too close to my nose.
From the stage, the lead singer grabbed the mic and dramatically said, “Uh, excuse me. We want some of that cake too.”
The crowd burst into laughter.
Harper personally invited them to join us and the cake got passed around.
She took countless pictures with the band including solo and group shots.
The band then posed with the rest of the guests and it felt endless.
After the band had interacted with everyone, they returned to the stage, the lead singer reaching for the mic to say, “Harper, are you ready for your present?”
She turned to me slowly and I winked at her. She immediately looked nervous and excited at the same time.
I held out my hand, telling her to come with me and she took it instantly.
We walked towards the front yard slowly so everyone could follow behind us.
When we were getting close, I stopped her, telling her to close her eyes and she didn’t even question it.
She closed her eyes and I stood right behind her to cover them gently with my hands.
Then, I guided her forward a few more steps.
The crowd saw her present before she did, but they made sure not to say a word about it, but I was certain that the gasps made her anticipate it even more.
When I removed my hands, she gasped loudly.
Parked in the driveway was the purple Porsche she couldn’t stop staring at when we were at the car dealership.
She covered her mouth with both hands, then dropped them immediately to show me the widest smile I had ever seen when she turned around to face me.
‘How did you get it so fast? It wasn’t too long ago that we left the car dealership. How–how did you even know?”
I was watching you.”
I pulled the keys from my pocket and placed them in the palm of her hand.
“Happy birthday, babe.”
She squealed as she ran to the car, circling it a few times to make sure it was real. She then slid into the driver seat, gripping the steering wheel like she was afraid it would disappear or something.
I just stood by the car door and let her take it all in.
When she stepped out, she threw her arms around me so tightly that I nearly lost my balance.
“Thank you!” she kept saying.
I kissed her forehead. “That’s not all.”
She froze. “What do you mean that’s not all?”
While still holding her hand, I guided her back towards the crowd.
I pulled out another set of keys and placed them in her hand.
She looked down at them with confusion. “What are these for?”
“These are the keys to this entire estate.”
There was a collective gasp from the crowd as her eyes went wide.
“What?” Her jaw dropped.
“It’s yours and it’s already in your name.”

Tears immediately filled her eyes and she looked like there was so much she wanted to say, but she couldn’t let a word out. Instead, she just covered her face with her hand.
