I arrived at the Aldridge Estate that evening not long after I’d spoken to Maddox. What he’d told me was still running through my head.

I found Mr Aldridge in the foyer, speaking to the butler with his posture straight like he was already over the fact that he wasn’t Tiffany’s biological father.

As I started getting closer, I expected him to turn and look at me, but he didn’t. It was the butler who was the first to notice me and he greeted me politely before excusing himself and walking off. Only then did Mr Aldridge turn to face me.

“Good evening,” I said politely.

He replied instantly with a neutral tone, but his expression said everything else. He wasn’t pleased that I only showed up there at that time.

I knew I had more than enough time to explain myself, so I first got into my act.

“Where’s my wife?” I asked like I meant it. “She’s not picking up my calls.”

His expression softened slightly. “She must have fallen asleep.”

That made me pause for a second before speaking again. “Really? After everything that happened?”

His eyes sharpened again. “What took you so long to get here?”

“I was busy. I wish I’d been here sooner.”

He shook his head like he wasn’t convinced.

“You should have been here,” he said before turning and walking toward the minibar.

I followed behind him immediately, preparing my voice so it would sound apologetic enough. “I really feel awful that I wasn’t here when my wife needed me. I’m sorry.”

Even as I said all that, the words didn’t feel like they meant anything to me.

“I heard what happened from Maddox,” I said.

That got a small reaction out of him. He paused to glance back at me, then faced forward again and kept moving without saying a word about it.

When we reached the mini bar, he gestured for me to sit and I leaned back in my seat as soon as I sat down.

He moved behind the counter, glancing at me as he said, “What will you have?”

I gave my preference and he started with some ice cubes, then poured me a drink, sliding the glass toward me before pouring another glass for himself.

It was only after he took a sip from his glass that I took a sip from mine.

We drank in silence for a few minutes and during that time, it was just the sound of ice shifting in the glass.

“Hey,” I said, not even putting any effort into my voice to sound like I was worried about her. “I heard the news and damn. That sucks. I can’t imagine being told something as life changing as that. Good thing I’m me. But are you good?”

She must’ve had enough of my mockery and fake concern because she swiftly sat up and turned to finally face me.

“Damn, you really look like shit,” I said, my eyes stuck on the mascara that ran down her puffy eyes and cheeks.

“Get out!” she yelled as she pointed at the door.

I rolled my eyes. “Oh, Tiff, what’s with all the tears? Why are you even crying about it when you’re doing the exact same thing like your mom? You two are just so al-”

She slapped me hard across the face to make me stop and the force made me look away. I just clenched that side of my jaw as I felt the sting, laughing about it like it was expected.

The goal was to piss her off some more and when I looked back at her, I expected to find her so upset that she’d want to slap me again. Instead, I found her staring at that side of my jaw and I knew right at that moment that she was staring at the mark left behind by Anna.

Curious to get a closer look, she stretched out her hand so she could touch that spot, but I pushed her hand away. My disgust towards her got worse everyday.

The look in her eyes changed for a second and I could tell that she knew why I had pushed her away.

Then, she clenched her fists as her expression hardened.

“What happened?” she asked.

I tried to dodge the question for a while because it was so embarrassing for me. I even thought of just saying I got into a fight with another guy, but instead, I quickly got off the bed so I could leave without telling her, but she rushed to the door and locked it.

“You’re not going anywhere until you tell me what happened!” She blocked the way.

I sighed in defeat. “It was Anna.”

“Anna?” Her eyes narrowed, like she had an idea who exactly I was talking about, but still wanted confirmation.

“Yeah, Harper’s sister.”

I expected her to ask how that even happened, but she didn’t. Instead, she rushed to the bed, picked up her phone and made a call while pacing impatiently.

I wondered what she was doing and was just about to ask when someone picked up her call and she spoke angrily while quickly giving instructions.

I could feel it in her voice that she was about to make Anna pay, but I knew she wasn’t doing it for me, it was for her because she was so mad about Mr Aldridge not being her father and she just wanted to take it out on somebody.

Seeing her get involved should’ve bothered me, but it didn’t. Even though Anna was about to pay and it was going to affect Harper, I still didn’t give a fuck because she deserved it after how she had set me up.
