It was barely 9 in the morning when the sound of Tiffany crying echoed from the bathroom. The sounds went from soft and quiet to loud and broken quickly.
I just stood in the bedroom, staring blankly ahead as I unbuttoned my shirt, listening to every bit of it and somehow, it didn’t move me in the way it should have. All I could think about was that she wasn’t entitled to anything anymore.
I knew Mr Aldridge was still playing nice by acting like nothing had happened for her sake, but it wasn’t going to last forever. Just as I took off my shirt and tossed it aside, her cries got even louder and I wondered if I should go in there and give a shit. But before I could even decide, my phone rang. I walked over to the bedside table and glanced at the screen, rolling my eyes the moment I saw my mother–in–law as the caller ID.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes again before picking up.
“Hello?”
“What took you so long to pick up?” Her voice was already sharp and irritated. “Anyway, are you with Tiffany?”
I huffed. “Yes, we’re still at the Aldridge Estate.”
“Oh, you are?” Her voice softened, like that had just given her some hope.
“Mr Aldridge allowed her to get some rest. But we’re about to leave.”
“What? He didn’t ask her to stay?”
“No.”
“That asshole! Anyway, she’s not been picking up my calls since yesterday and it’s driving me crazy! I’m so worried about her. Even if she wasn’t pregnant, I would have been just as worried.”
I glanced toward the bathroom door as I said, “She just needs some time.”
She sighed. “You’re right. She really needs more time after how that monster broke her heart!”
I shook my head in disbelief. “I’ll take care of her. You don’t need to worry about that.”
I thought that would be enough to put her at ease, but it only seemed to make her more agitated.
“This is all his fault. How could he dump something so serious on her like that?”
I stared blankly at the wall, finding it ridiculous that she was playing the blame game like she wasn’t the one who had created: that entire mess in the first place. She was the reason Tiffany was in that bathroom but of course, she wouldn’t take responsibility. She never did.
After the call ended, I walked straight into the bathroom. Tiffany was sitting on the toilet, her face buried in her hands with her shoulders shaking. Her cries were quieter but still heavy.
I didn’t stop in front of her or say anything. I just walked right past her and stepped into the shower.
As soon as I turned on the water, the sound filled the room and instantly drowned everything else out. I couldn’t hear her anymore, but I could still see her through the glass.

Chapter 217
I closed my eyes and tilted my head slightly under the water, not even bothering to keep looking at her while she continued to break down. All I could still think about was what would become of her.
Even after I finished my shower a few minutes later, she was still sitting on that toilet while hunched over.
I reached for a robe and put it on, my gaze lingering on her just a little longer.
Part of me just wanted to walk out and say nothing so I could leave her to deal with it all by herself, just as she had done so far, but another part of me just wanted to put a stop to that.
Stopping right in front of her, I said, “Hey, you really need to stop. It’s not good for the baby.”
She slowly lifted her head, glaring at me with her red and puffy eyes. “Like you actually fucking care!”
I let out a short chuckle. “I don’t.”
And with that, I left her in the bathroom.
It was only when I finished dressing up that I heard movement in the bathroom. I was glad she was finally doing something because I was getting impatient. I had things to do and wanted to leave immediately, but I couldn’t. Putting on a show still mattered.
To pass the time while I waited for Tiffany, I scrolled on my phone and that was when I saw Maddox’s post. It was a video of him and Harper in his kitchen. They were cooking together. I clenched my jaw tightly as I watched. She was in a sexy dress that showed off her toned legs and not even having that apron took anything away from her. She laughed and smiled like she hadn’t set me up the previous day. It was like she had no guilt because I didn’t matter at all.
She also looked at him in a way that I’d never seen before, like she couldn’t believe it had taken her that long to see how special he was. I never thought I’d see the day I’d be threatened just by the look in her eyes for him. She was really slipping away from me.
And then there was Maddox. The way his face lit up when he looked at her like he had everything he could ever want in the world made my blood boil.
The sight of that made my grip on my phone tighten. It just wasn’t fair that one person got to have all of it.
I could’ve easily scrolled past that video if I didn’t want to see it anymore. Instead, I tossed my phone aside with a grunt of frustration.
At some point while Tiffany and I slept in the same room the previous night, I’d second guessed whatever she wanted to do o Anna. I thought that maybe it wasn’t worth it but now, watching Harper smile like that after everything she’d done and made a fool out of me, I didn’t care anymore. Whatever Tiffany wanted to do about it, I wasn’t going to stop it.
Tiffany and I came downstairs together like everything was normal. She had cleaned up her face but still had those puffy
eyes.
Our hands were intertwined and she leaned onto me by resting her head against my arm like she needed the support. I even glanced down at her. She looked so fragile that for a second, I wondered if she actually needed me. Then, I reminded myself that she didn’t. That was just another performance.
We ran into Mr Aldridge, who was on his way toward the dining room and the moment she saw him, she pulled away from

After a while, they slowly pulled apart and she wiped her face, trying to compose herself as she came back to me.
Looking away from her and gesturing towards the dining table, he said, “You’re right in time for breakfast.”
Tiffany shook her head immediately. “Thanks, but we can’t stay.”
I glanced at her because that surprised me. Looking at how she didn’t want to let go when they hugged, she would have used every excuse to stay longer in that house, but she was the one refusing.
Then, I realized it must’ve been because of Anna.
Mr Aldridge didn’t even insist that we stay for breakfast. He simply nodded.
As we turned to leave and started heading towards the front doors, his voice stopped us in our tracks.
“Tiffany…”
She turned back quickly and said, “Yes, Dad?”
I blinked rapidly, wondering how he would react to that, but she spoke again, almost apologetically.
“I mean-”
“It’s okay,” he said gently. “Have you spoken to your
mother?”
Her expression hardened immediately. “No. I’m not ready.”
“I understand. I just wanted to know,” he said. “Alright then, you two get home safely.”
She forced a smile, like she was trying so hard to keep it together.
She was even the first to turn and lead the way, like staying there any second longer would get in the way of whatever she had planned.
As we stepped outside, I glanced at her and noticed that she was trying harder to hold it together. I could see it in the way her lips were pressed together and the way her eyes blinked a little too fast. She was fighting the tears.
Still, I said nothing and let her be in that moment alone.
