As I closed the door behind me while following Anna outside, I had no idea what she wanted to talk to me about, but whatever it was, she didn’t want Harper to be involved.

I was so curious that I stopped right after the steps and said, “So what’s this about?”

She turned to look back at me without stopping in her tracks. “Not there. That’s too close. Come on.”

She gestured with her head for me to follow her to my car, so I did without asking any question and I confirmed it at that moment that she didn’t want even the slightest chance that her sister could hear what we were about to talk about.

I finally joined her, leaning against the hood of my car just as she did and she looked at the front door, then the windows, like she was trying to make sure one last time.

“Yup,” she said, “Harper definitely can’t hear us from here.”

“Now can you tell me what this is about?” I asked, getting impatient now.

She smacked her lips. “On the way downstairs, I received a text and told Harper that it was from my ex, but it wasn’t.”

“Who was it?”

“Nico.”

I wasn’t able to respond right away, the sound of that name making me pace back and forth.

“Nico?” I repeated through gritted teeth while trying to keep my voice down. “I thought we settled your debt with him. He’s supposed to be a thing of the past.” I stopped pacing, narrowing my eyes as I pointed at her. “Are you getting involved with him again? Why are you looking for trouble?”

She shook her head firmly. “Whoa, I know that I fucked up so many times, but you’re wrong to think that I’m getting involved with Nico and his people again. Why would you think that? Do you have little faith in me?”

I sighed, trying to cool down. “It’s not that I have little faith in you, but why would he contact you again when the warning given to him was clear? He wouldn’t have the audacity unless you let it happen. So what happened?”

She quickly scrolled on her phone. “I’ll show you that he’s the one who reached out first and said he wants to see me. And yes, he definitely remembers the warning given to him by you and Sebastian to never contact me again or there will be consequences.”

She showed me the text that was sent to her and my head tilted thoughtfully after reading it. “Then whatever this is, it must be important. Nico wouldn’t dare do this for nothing.”

Putting her phone away, she said, “I’m going to meet him and you and Sebastian are coming with me, but Harper stays out of this. I don’t want her getting involved in the shitty side of my life.”

She was absolutely right about that. I couldn’t imagine myself letting Harper get involved in such issues with gangsters.

When we were done out there, she led the way back inside the house and the two of us already knew that Harper would ask what was going on. We had already agreed on what to say when that question would come up.

Harper was already coming down the stairs when we got to the living room and she smiled suspiciously, closely watching our body language with Anna. I wondered if she heard any of that.

“You’re back,” she said, still keeping that smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“Obviously,” Anna said with a forced laugh. “Anyway, I’ll leave you two love birds. I have a face to wash”

Harper stepped aside so Anna could go up the stairs and as soon as her sister was gone, she held onto my hand and pulled me towards the couch so we could sit down.

“Is everything okay?” she asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.

I sighed. “Nope. When your sister took me outside, I thought there was just going to be some type of warning for me to not break your heart, but she actually wanted to talk to me about her ex. He’s a real piece of shit. She had actually blocked him yet he still found a way to reach her. She doesn’t want to get involved with him in any way. That’s why she wants me to handle it.”

She seemed to believe what I had just told her, as her expression softened a little and she reached for my hand, gently squeezing it.

“So what are you gonna do?” she asked.

“First of all, I’m going to tell my uncle. He would obviously want to be part of this.”

She chuckled. “I can already imagine him swinging into action.

“Yup,” I said, gently touching the side of her face. “I know how you’re feeling right now but it’s nothing you have to worry about, okay?”

She nodded, letting out a sigh of relief. “I just want my sister to put everything behind her.”

“She wants that as well. It’s just that the people from the past are trying to make an entrance again into her life, but we’re not gonna let that happen.”

She suddenly wrapped her arms around me tightly, resting the side of her face on my chest.
