Chapter 224
Chapter 224
Harper
After closing the front door while listening to Maddox drive off, I lingered by the door, resting my back against it as I struggled to wipe the smile off my face. I even placed a hand on my chest, thinking about the lengths he wanted to go to just to make sure that my sister stayed out of trouble and no one got in the way of her new beginning.
It was only when I heard the door close upstairs that I snapped out of my thoughts, clearing my throat and gently slapping my cheeks like I didn’t want anyone else to see how I kept smiling because of him.
There were still some shopping bags on the living room floor, so before I went up the stairs, I picked them all up, then made my way to the bedroom.
What Maddox had bought me in that store only added on to the several other outfits and shoes that I already had, thanks to him. At that moment, it began to feel like I might need a bigger closet. I paused halfway on the stairs when I realized I already had a bigger closet. In fact, it was one of the biggest closets I had ever seen in my entire life and it was part of the mansion he had gifted to me on my birthday. I still hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do with it and I laughed to myself when I thought that maybe I could use the closet for the time being.
When I opened the bedroom door, I paused right in the doorway, my jaw dropping when I saw Anna. She was already sitting in front of the mirror, quickly applying the serum like she was already running out of time.
“It looks like someone wants to look perfect when someone finally arrives,” I teased her as I closed the door behind me.
“Shut up,” she playfully replied, her words not as clear as usual as she moved her jaw around while applying the serum
I shook my head as I approached the small table where I had put the other shopping bags, my gaze mostly on her. She had to give the serum a few seconds before moving on to the moisturizer, so she glanced back at me before her gaze dropped to the bags.
“The way I see it, I don’t think you have enough space for all this.” She gestured with her hand.
“Well, it’s not really like that.” I lightly shook my head as I began to take out the clothes from the bags and put them on the bed. “I can still make some room.”
“I already checked out the closet and trust me, you have a lot of work to do if you really want to make some room.
I grinned. “There’s always another option.”
“What? Taking your new clothes to your new house?”
She meant to tease me when she asked me that, but it made me chuckle.
“Damn, I didn’t know that was going to be so funny to you.” Her head tilted with amusement.
I sighed. “Gosh, I missed you so much. It’s just that I had the same exact thought when I was coming upstairs.”
Her face lit up. “I’m certain that I missed you more.”
She then looked back at the mirror, taking a few pumps of the moisturizer. “I heard Maddox leave just a few nunutes ago “Yeah, I can imagine how his dad must feel right now because he’s so late
“Hey
1 paused because it looked like she wanted me to look over and when I did, she continued.
“The bright side is that it was worth it.”
“It really was.” I grinned.
“So….” she said slowly as she looked back at the mirror. “Do you think you’re ever gonna get to use that card he gave you?”
“At this point. I don’t think so. He’s been full of surprises and I think there’s more.”
“That’s great. Then you should let him spoil you however he wants.”
I giggled as I folded one of the dresses on the bed. “At this point, I’ve already gotten used to it and I have to admit that if it were to stop, it would feel kind of strange.”
“That better not happen because if it does, he’ll have me to deal with.”
There was a playfulness behind that threat that made me not take her seriously.
“There’s something I need to tell you.” Her tone was suddenly so serious that it made me pause with the second dress in my hand.
“What’s up? Is this about your ex?”
She scoffed, getting up from the chair only to move closer to the mirror by leaning forward. “It has nothing to do with that piece of shit.”
“Oh, then what is it?” I waited with raised eyebrows, her sudden change of mood still making me worry. She looked like she was about to tell me some bad news.
She sighed, her shoulders dropping slightly. “I really need your help.”
The vulnerability in her voice made me drop the dress on the bed and approach her right away. I stood right beside her. ready to listen to what she needed to tell me.
“What’s going on?” I asked, looking at her through the mirror.
She forced a laugh as she looked up at the ceiling, shaking her head firmly. “No. Forg
She turned to face the other side and I was left facing her back, which made me face–to–face with her.
“Please don’t do that. What’s wrong?”
it.”
around to the other side so I could stand
“It’s really ridiculous so just forget about it.” She waved her hand dismissively. “I bet you’ve been wondering what I was doing outside with Maddox, at least hearing it from my side. There’s no way he didn’t tell you about it. I needed to talk to him about my ex. I know that sounds pretty straightforward, but there are certain things I couldn’t tell you. I just felt more comfortable telling him because it’s embarrassing. Maddox is such a good listener, you know.”
I nodded in agreement with a small smile because I was still curious about what she had to tell me. “He’s more than just a good listener. I never thought there was so much good in him. Every time, he keeps surprising me in ways I never thought were possible.”
She rolled her eyes, placing a hand on her hip. “If only you could see your face right now. You’re so fucking red.
I blinked rapidly, only realizing at that moment that my heart had started racing while talking about Maddox
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I crossed my arms and tried to play it cool.
She kept teasing me about it and I should’ve kept playing along, but I was more bothered about what she hadn’t yet told me.
I just couldn’t let it go, so when she looked away and focused on her hair, still keeping the mood playful, I decided to bring it
*I know you told me to forget it, but I can’t. You need my help and I want to know why.”
She sighed in defeat. “I just hope you don’t get mad at me.”
