Chapter 240

Harper

When lunch was finally served, it immediately became obvious that it was the kind of focal prepared by people who hart spent years mastering their craft.

The round dining table was covered with meats that were perfectly grilled, fresh seafood, elegant salads, even roasted vegetables that looked so well seasoned

There were baskets of expensive wines, sparkling juices and desserts waiting on a nearby table for later

For the first time, I wasn’t sitting with Maddox and Anna. I was seated between Aunt Rachel and Aure Susan

Anna sat farther between two of my cousins.

And when it came to where Maddox was seated across from me, it made me frown, a few times because the situation itselt was annoying. He was sitting between Veronica and Trina.

I couldn’t stand how Trina kept finding reasons to look in his direction. I didn’t trust her, not even a little it just felt like she was up to something.

It was only when the meal began that I tried so hard not to focus on them.

Several conversations happened at once and my father also sat across the table, occasionally joining different conversations as they developed.

Aunt Rachel complimented one of the dishes while taking another bite, Aunt Susan asked me if I preferred Sydney or Melbourne and Lily nearly dropped her fork while laughing at something Dean said.

For a few minutes everything felt normal, that was until I noticed some of my cousins staring at Anna again and again until finally, one of them asked the question.

“How are your arms so toned?”

My sister paused in the middle of taking a sip of water. She lowered her glass before responding.

“I train hard everyday.”

They looked past her to look at each other, the back at her.

Every single day?” they asked in unison.

Anna nodded. “Pretty much.”

My cousins looked genuinely impressed and even leaned closer.

So… what exactly do you do to look like this?” one of them asked.

Anna looked between them. “Running and boxing.”

“Whoa!” they said in unison.

Anna shrugged and continued eating like she hadn’t said anything impressive.

“You know,” Maddox chimed in from across the table. “Anna can throw a pretty tough punch and her kicks?”

tuli made severalheads turn and he catally cut another piece of chicken before continuing

“You wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that.”

Almost everyone at the table laughed and so did 1 tour it was because I was thinking of the exact moment she gave forayson taste of what she could do.

While everyone was still laughing lightly, Veronica suddenly laughed and was way louder than everyone else

I immediately looked at her because what Maddox had said wasn’t a laugh–until–you–couldn’t breathe type of funny Which meant exactly what I suspected. She was trying way too hard.

The sound of her laughter dragged on for a few more seconds before finally fading

Even though I was so irritated by that, I looked away before she noticed me staring.

The discussion shifted a few minutes later when my father wiped his mouth with a napkin before farning toward Madison

Maddox, I wanted your opinion on something.”

Maddox looked up from his plate to pay attention.

My father mentioned an emerging business concept that immediately sounded complicated but Maddox became interested ight away. The two of them even started discussing investment strategies and market trends.

listened for a few seconds then gave up.

Then, Lily groaned. “Oh no.”

Everyone looked at her.

Please don’t do this,” she said.

Do what?” my father asked.

My father was so amused, but his face suddenly turned serious. “This is important. If you’re going to run companies omeday, you need to start learning these conversations.”
