Chapter 239 Veronica
Chapter 239: Veronica
Maddox
I smiled when all the attention shifted toward me. Everything looked fine on the outside but on the inside, I hated it. Thai was supposed to be Harper’s moment. Her family had gathered to meet her, not me.
I tried several times to bring Harper back into the discussion while holding her hand, but Veronica found a way to stealit again every single time. Trina wasn’t making things any easier.
It became so obvious that I just couldn’t ignore it anymore. I even glanced down at Harper because I was worried about her She still had a smile on her face and was handling it better than most people would, but I knew her. At that moment, she.
was forcing it.
So I tightened my grip on her hand just enough for her to feel it and remind her that I was there.
She immediately squeezed my hand back and that should have made me feel better, but I was still fuming inside.
When my gaze shifted toward Anna, she wasn’t nearly as good at hiding her feelings. Her eyes narrowed every time Veronica interrupted her sister.
Even when I deliberately shifted attention toward Anna since she hadn’t been introduced properly yet, Veronica somehow managed to make herself the center of attention again.
I was starting to lose patience.
Thankfully, Mr Beauregard finally stepped in and said, “Why don’t we all take our seats?”
Everyone began moving toward the sofas and armchairs.
I stayed close to Harper and Anna followed beside her.
Once we sat down, Harper looked between both of us as she gave a subtle nod. She was trying to say that she was okay, but I wasn’t entirely convinced.
Still, I appreciated the effort.
“I really can’t stop staring at that purse,” Harper’s Aunt Rachel said. “It’s absolutely gorgeous.”
Harper looked down at the purse but before she could answer, Veronica chimed in from across the room.
“Maddox got it for her. That explains why it’s authentic.”
Trina, who sat beside her, chuckled. “Yup. Totally the reason.”
I hated that they kept doing that, but I still had to keep my composure.
Instead of reacting, Harper exhaled slowly and smiled as she looked around the room.
“I’m really happy to be here. I can’t believe I was so nervous before.”
“Everyone here can agree that I’m the reason you’re not nervous anymore,” her uncle said jokingly.
His wife chimed in, shaking her head like she wasn’t taking him seriously and everyone had a light moment while making Harper part of that conversation.
Unfortunately, it didn’t last because once again, Veronica interrupted.
“So, Maddox,” she said loudly, “how long have you been dating Harper?”
I almost snapped because I knew exactly what she was doing once again. She wasn’t going to take the attention away from Harper this time, so I turned towards her and spoke to her softly.
“Babe?” I asked, wanting her to be the one to respond.
Her eyes met mine and she immediately understood. I was only giving her the spotlight that already belonged to her. Her lips curved into a smile and without looking away from me, she said, “We’ve been dating for-”
“Oh, forget it,” Veronica interrupted. “I’m just kidding. I wasn’t that curious.”
A few people exchanged glances, but I barely paid attention to them because right next to Veronica, Mr Beauregard looked like he was seconds away from saying something he shouldn’t. He knew what his wife was trying to do.
Thankfully, some of Harper’s cousins immediately jumped into the conversation.
“No, seriously. How long has it been?” Lily asked.
“Yeah! We want to know. We keep seeing you guys everywhere. And OMG! I went crazy when I saw those clips with The Midnight Echo. They were awesome!”

Harper’s face instantly brightened up. She was just about to respond when once again, Veronica ruined it
Dismissively waving her hand, she said, “I never understood the hype. It’s just noise”
Everyone went silent and I immediately looked at Harper. She stared at Veronica for a few seconds then smiled it wasnt even a sweet smile or a polite one. I knew she wasn’t about to just let that slide. That had already happened too many
times.
“It’s a good thing some of us don’t think it’s noise.” Her voice was calm but confident. “Those who don’t like it, don’t have to listen to it.
Anna looked down, like she was trying to hide her grin. I certainly had to hide mine.
I spotted her Aunt Rachel nodding while trying to hold back her laugh. She must have enjoyed Harper’s response that much.
Dean’s eyes went wide, even his mother looked surprised.
The tension should have been obvious because suddenly, Uncle Hank cleared his throat and said, “Lunch should be ready soon.” He looked around dramatically. “Am I the only one starving here?”
Dean was the first one to raise his hand. “Nope. But the way I see it, it might take a few more minutes.”
Several people laughed and just like that, the tension was gone.
Mr Beauregard waited until the laughter died down and said, “It’s a good thing lunch might take a few more minutes because I have something to say.”
That made everyone pay attention to him and he looked directly at Harper.
“I want to start by saying welcome home, my daughter.”
Those words must have meant so much to her because I felt her fingers tighten around mine.
He continued, “I know things haven’t always been easy. We missed so many years that we can never get back. But despite that, you’re my firstborn and I couldn’t be proud of the young lady you’ve become. You’re hardworking, kind, intelligent and far more determined than anyone here might think.”
Harper was so embarrassed that she shook her head while smiling.
Her father kept praising her and I glanced toward Veronica. The smile on her face looked forced. She clearly didn’t enjoy hearing Harper being praised. Unfortunately for her, she couldn’t do shit about that because it was Mr Beauregard himself who was talking.
“My daughter is also incredibly talented,” he said.
Harper shut her eyes like she didn’t want him to keep talking about her that way. She was getting more and more embarrassed.
It was obvious to everyone but her father didn’t stop.
“She’s one of the most impressive people I’ve ever spoken to when it comes to technology.”
She tried to make him stop again but he ignored her.
“The things my daughter knows at her age are remarkable.”
She finally covered her face and said, “Please, stop. You’re making it sound like I’m a genius or something.”
Several family members laughed.
“You could be,” he proudly said to her.
Just then, Lily leaned forward excitedly. “Can you hack computers?”
Harper chuckled as she dropped her hands. “I can, but it’s not like what you see in the movies.”
Lily looked a little confused.
Harper was about to explain further when Veronica interrupted once again.
“Anna…”
Anna furrowed her eyebrows as she looked at Veronica. “You talking to me?”
“Of course I’m talking to you. You’re the only one here with that name.” Veronica chuckled but sounded irritated. “I’m curious. What do you do for a living?”
The question itself wasn’t bad. The problem was how she asked it. She sounded like she had already formed an opinion. Anna was just about to respond when Veronica spoke over her.

“Actually, let me guess”
Anna’s expression flattened like she was already throwing a punch in her mind.
“You’re a hair stylist.”
Anna shook her head. “Nope.”
“Oh.” Veronica laughed lightly. “Really? That’s the first thing I thought of because of your hair. That’s quite a crazy color but it’s so silky.”
Anna forced a smile. “Thanks. I just got a new job.”
Veronica leaned forward. “Which is?”
Before Anna could answer, Dean finally stepped in. “Mom…” His voice sounded like he didn’t approve.
Veronica looked over at him. “What?”
