Anna didn’t even argue. I even thought she’d want to come with me, but she looked like the had dready decided that would be the one to handle st
And with that. I left the living room and made my way into the hallway
Even though the estate was huge, I already had a good idea where Harper had gone. There was this balcony ite had looking at earlier and couldn’t stop talking about it. I hoped I’d find her there.
Sure enough, when I got to that balcony, I found her standing there. Her hands rested on the rating while
of the beautiful garden on the other side. She was so focused on it that she didn’t notice me right aw
It was only when I cleared my throat that she did
She looked over her shoulder and our eyes met for a second before she looked away again.
“Hey,” she said.
“I knew I’d find you here,” I said, as I approached her.
She chuckled. “I just needed some air?
“Of course you did
I stopped behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. She immediately relaxed in my arms and I kissed her cheek
She closed her eyes for as long as my lips were against her skin and I felt just how much she needed that comfor
After pulling my lips away, I stared at the garden as well as I spoke right neat her ear.
“I know this isn’t easy for you.”
She laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “You have no idea. I can’t just be thrust into this world like this.
I rested my chin lightly against her shoulder while still staring at the garden. “So what do you want to do?”
She sighed. “First of all, I need to talk to my father. But that’s going to be right after Veronica lets him go
I raised my eyebrows. “What do you mean?”
She turned her head slightly to look at me. “I heard them not too long after I left the living room. I’m not sure if they’re still arguing, but Veronica isn’t happy”
“I’m not surprised, but the thing is the’ll just have to accept it
She looked back towards the garden. “That’s too many shares and a million dollar company. I just.. I don’t know?
I held her tighter, but not enough to trap her just enough to remind her that she wasn’t carrying this alone “That’s why you need time to think about everything. You don’t have to decide anything today”
She didn’t respond right away, so I gave her another option. It was one that I knew she would never ask for herself
“We can leave right now if you want.”
That got her attention and she turned her head fast. She looked at me like I was crazy, but I meant every word. I didn’t care about the Beauregards family gathering as much as I cared about her. If she wanted to go home, I’d rather have her on my jet before sunset.
Just for a second, she looked tempted, then she shook her head.
“No. We’re staying.”
My lips curved into a small smile because I had expected that answer. I didn’t see her running away from that problem and I was glad I was right.
“I don’t want to leave yet.” Her voice was firmer now. “I need to deal with this situation.”
I kissed her forehead because I was so proud of her, then rested my forehead against hers.
When she looked up at me and our eyes met, some of the worry disappeared from her eyes and that was enough.
“Thanks,” she said with a genuine smile.
“For what?”
She hugged me before responding, while being careful not to rest her face on my white shirt. She may have gone for a simple makeup look, but it was still makeup and she wanted to make sure my shirt wasn’t stained.
“Thanks for coming to find me,” she said. “I thought being alone was going to be enough.”
“And then you realized the power of the Maddox effect,” I bragged.
She giggled. “Shut up.”
Harper
I followed Anna into the bedroom we would be sharing for the night and the moment I closed the door behind me. I stopped walking just to look around.
I could see a section of the estate because of the floor-to-ceiling windows and Anna rushed over there just to see outside “Wow,” she said as she slowly turned to look around. “All this plus two king-sized beds?” Then her lips curved into a mischievous smile. “Poor Maddox.”
