Chapter 243: Already Talking About It

Maddox

The swimming pool was surrounded by lounge chairs that were evenly spaced and I sat between Dean and Anna, the three of us casually talking about football that evening.

When the phone in my hand started vibrating, I was certain that it was the hundredth time. It wasn’t because someone was calling or texting me. It was because the notifications wouldn’t stop coming in. Mr Beauregard’s picture with Harper had exploded online. Not only were entertainment pages posting it. The major news outlets had also picked it up.

One picture was all it took for everyone to be talking about Harper in a way that has never happened before, not even with me.

Dean glanced over at my screen, then back at his own screen with a sigh. “I hope Harper will be okay.”

Anna, who was sitting on the other side, looked over at him with a creased forehead. “Why?”

Dean and I exchanged a glance and I was glad we were both thinking the same thing. The fact that she had to ask almost made me laugh.

He gave me a nod, wanting me to be the one to explain it to her.

“Because Harper is about to get a crazy amount of press attention and it’s the overwhelming kind. The media loves stories like these, especially when it involves a child, who hasn’t been around for years only to pop up and carry the last name. This case is very special because it involves the Beauregards.”

Anna’s forehead creases relaxed, like she had fully understood what I had just said.

“Oh.”

Dean nodded. “The reporters are going to be everywhere she goes. You know how we’re having dinner at Uncle Hank’s restaurant in an hour? We might even run into some of those reporters.”

She looked immediately annoyed. “That’s one shitty situation.” She then pressed her lips together, like she regretted saying that word in front of Dean. “Oh…sorry.”

Dean chuckled lightly. “Don’t worry about it. I hear that a lot from Trina. Now, before this gets out of hand, Harper needs bodyguards.”

Anna sat up more. “I like the sound of that because if I’m the one who ends up protecting my sister from the press, somebody might get punched in the face.”

Dean burst out laughing and I laughed as well, only because he must have thought it was a joke. But I knew that Anna was completely serious..

We were still talking about it when my phone rang. The caller ID that popped up made me smirk and I deliberately looked at Anna before answering.

“It’s my uncle.”

Anna pressed her lips together like she was now holding back a special smile.

Dean noticed it too and slightly raised his eyebrows.

I had to bite the inside of my cheek just to hold back my laugh.

When my uncle and I started talking about the picture of Harper and her father, I kept glancing at Anna. Her face was turning red quickly.

“Yeah,” I said casually. “Anna’s with me.”

She turned her head so fast in my direction that it looked like she had snapped something.

I couldn’t wait to describe her reaction to my uncle, but that was going to be at another time.

He must have wanted to also avoid asking a lot of questions about her because he quickly changed the

subject. I didn’t even mind because it was something Anna and I were actually interested in.

Chapter 243: Already Talking About It

“Still going ahead with your plan against Tiffany?” my uncle asked.

“Yup,” I said confidently. “I’ve already made a few calls. It might take up to two weeks, but it’s going to be unforgettable so it’s worth it. I can’t wait to see the look on her face.”

I glanced at Anna when I said that and she immediately understood that I was talking about Tiffany. She even smirked like she could already imagine it. The funny thing was she didn’t even know what I was up to. She was just glad that I was taking action.

On the other hand, Dean looked clueless because he had no idea what I was talking about. It was better to keep it that way. I didn’t want to tell Harper what had happened just yet and it was possible that he’d tell her if he found out.

After the call with my uncle, Anna suddenly became fascinated by the pool. She stared at the water like it contained something she had never seen before.

I was unable to hold in my short laugh at that moment and she glanced at me with raised eyebrows. “What?”

“Why don’t you tell me?” I said to her.

Her eyes quickly narrowed. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
