I came early the following morning to Anna’s luxury apartment so we’d have breakfast together.

It had been 20 minutes since my arrival and I hadn’t been able to talk to her much because for about 18 minutes, she was of the phone with her boyfriend.

She giggled and spoke softly as they hade plans for the weekend.

She had offered to make us breakfast, but judging by how she was so carried away by that phone call even when the water was ready, I took it upon myself to make it instead.

When she saw me reach for the mugs and spoons to set the table, she even got more comfortable talking to him for a few more minutes. It made me shake my head, only because I had never seen her like that with anyone else.

By the time she was done with the phone call, breakfast was already served.

“Well, that call took a bit longe

than I thought it would,” she said as she joined me in the dining room.

“A bit?” I scoffed. “It’s been 30 minutes.”

“Hmm, I must’ve lost track of time.” She took a seat across from me but didn’t touch anything when she noticed me staring at her with a look of amusement. “What?”

“You’re still blushing,” I teased her.

She crossed her arms and boldly said, “Deal with it.”

My jaw dropped at her response even though it was something I had constantly come to hear from her whenever I pointed that out.

“At this point,” I said as I reached for a spoon. “I might as well steal it because Ella and Zoey always tease me when I’m around Maddox.”

“You’re the most obvious person I’ve ever met.” She lightly shook her head while getting her sandwich. “I’m glad you finally told him because we could all see it. I’m even surprised he let you come here alone. I thought he’d drop you off.”

“I’m the one who stopped him.”

She paused. “Why?”

“If he keeps dropping me off everywhere, when will I get to enjoy my car? I’ve barely driven it ever since he got it for me.”

“Fair point.”

She took a bite of her sandwich and I stared at her for a few seconds as I wondered if that was the right moment. I could’ve easily asked her over the phone, but that was such a sensitive topic that I preferred talking about it in person.

“What’s up?”

Her sudden question caught me off guard. “What?”

“You’re staring, so what’s up?”

I forced a chuckle. “Maybe now’s not a good time.”

“Hey, whatever it is, you can tell me.” She put down her sandwich, leaned back in her seat and crossed her as listening. What’s this about?”

I cleared my throat like that would help me get the words out better. “Last night, Maddox told me you’ve withdrawn huge sums of money using my card and gambled it all away.”

Her mood instantly changed and she rubbed her hand down her face. “Shit! I can’t believe he opened his

mouth.

She couldn’t even make eye contact anyiffure as she was so embarrassed, to the point where she got up and was about o leave the table.

“Wait, please don’t go. It’s okay.”

She must’ve needed to hear that so much because as soon as I said it, she sighed and sat back down.

“I’m sorry. You told me I could use that card as well and I took advantage of that. But you need to know that I stopped-”

“He told me everything so don’t worry.” I gave her a reassuring smile. “I just wanted you to know that I know. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“How could I possibly come to you and tell you that I was gambling so much money away? I really fell back into my old ways. I wanted to blame it on Jane for making me walk into the casino that first night. But the truth is the rest was up to me and I just wouldn’t stop. I’m so glad Maddox and Sebastian were there to help me. It was just for two months, but if not for both of them, things would be very different right now. All that aside, I’m going to kill Maddox for this.”

I chuckled. “Yup. He mentioned that part. But please don’t. He only told me because he hated keeping it a secret from me.”

Anna sighed. “Fine, but again, I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I know you’re doing your best. I hope you’re no longer in touch with Jane.”

My phone buzzed with a message notification just as she was responding.

“Not at all. I’ve moved on from that.”
