Sable POV
When the tether from Dark Flame broke and Winter Moon snapped into place, I didn’t expect to feel the onslaught of feelings from Jaxon. There is interest and intrigue. He’s curious about me. I guess that can be resolved by spending time together, provided he doesn’t forget I exist. There is fear of the mate bond too, though. I sense he doesn’t want the mate bond. Not because he isn’t interested, but because he’s afraid I’ll hurt him. That’s a strange reaction for one mate to have towards another mate. He brushed off my question too. He said it was normal for anyone. I didn’t feel that way though. I don’t think other people I’ve witnessed have acted that way either. I feel like there is something going on, but I don’t know if he will tell me about it either.
I was glad that lunch came. I was getting hungry, not having ate since earlier in the morning. If Nia and I hadn’t fallen asleep by the lake, we would have been long gone by now. I guess it’s good we took that nap. Now I’m here with my mate, who kept his promise and gave me my first kiss, and we are sharing our first meal together.
I’m having a hard time believing that he just realized how he had been behaving, but for now, I will stay quiet and observe his actions. As lunch was served and the kitchen staff left, we were alone, again. I am feeling awkward. I don’t really know how to break the ice and just talk to him. It seems all our conversations has some element of me having to tell him off. I look down at my plate and eat silently.
“Do you like the food?” Jaxon asks.
I was staring pretty hard at my plate and jumped when he spoke. “Sorry, um, yes, it’s good, thank you.”
He looks at me and I think the expression on his face is amused. Of course, I don’t have to wait long for him to confirm it, “You know, you are a hellfire when you are upset and shy when you are not. Don’t you think that’s a bit of a contrast?”
He smirks at me and I feel my cheeks heat, damn he looks sexy with that smirk, “I’ve been told I can be hell on wheels before, I’m not surprised to hear you say that.”
“So, why are you being shy now? Am I making you nervous?” He is looking at me with smoldering eyes. Damn him, he’s doing it on purpose.
“Nervous? No. I’m just trying not to laugh at the black streak running down your face.” I said, keeping a deadpan look, I add, “That’s why I’m trying not to look at you, so I don’t start laughing rudely.”
His eyes widen and he grabs his napkin and starts wiping his face. Now I am really trying not to laugh. “Did I get it?”
I couldn't help it, he looks so serious and I start laughing and I think it’s adding to the effect, so I keep going, “No. You spread it to your forehead.”
He gets up to go to a mirror inside of his liquor cabinet and then he says, “Son of a bitch. I am not someone who normally gets pranked, but I am someone who gets revenge, you little wretch!” He says chuckling.
“I have spent the better part of five years pranking warriors, Jaxon. Believe me when I say, you will never know when I am playing you.” I say as I walk over and look in his liquor cabinet. He has whisky, rum and bourbon. I see some bitters and dry garnishes. He certainly likes a good drink.
“See anything you like?” He asks whispering in my ear and sending a shiver down my spine.
On the top shelf of his cabinet I see a bottle of ‘Elijah Craig Small Batch’ and I point to it. “I don’t see many with Elijah Craig. A smoky bourbon, like your scent. Well, that with blood orange.”
His eyebrows shoot up, “You know your bourbon. So my scent to you is bourbon and blood orange?”
“I know what I like, I’m not a connoisseur. Yes, that is your scent to me. It’s a smoky bourbon with blood orange.” I say honestly.
He lowers his mouth to mine and my eyes close. I let myself get lost in the kiss as he deepens it. I move my arms to his shoulders as his grip tightens around my waist. A small gasp escapes my mouth and I hear him growl. I think he liked me gasping, because he pushes me to the wall and grabs my hands and raises them above my head. He has me pinned and sure I could get him off me easily but I am really enjoying the feel of his body against mine.
As he presses his body against me, I feel his hardness at my stomach. I let out a small moan and letting go of my hands, he reaches to the back of my legs and lifts me up. My legs instinctively wrap around his waist and my arms go around his neck.
Suddenly, the door swings open, “Hey, Alpha…Oh, shit. Sorry!” Matt says as he turns around and Jaxon breaks our kiss and sets me down.
“Ever heard of knocking Matt?” He growls and sounds irritated with a mix of frustration.
Feeling incredibly embarrassed, I run out of the room and to my room. As soon as I’m there, I lock my door and go to the bathroom to splash cold water on my face. What the hell is wrong with me? As much as I enjoyed that just now, I let myself get lost in the moment and I don’t know if I can trust him yet.
‘I didn’t mind at all. That was hot. Did you feel his body pressed against ours? The way he lifted us like we weigh nothing at all. I’m not going to lie, I won’t to go back there and continue doing that with him.’ Nia said wagging her eyebrows at me.
‘Don’t be a shameless slut.' I laughed, "We need to make sure we can trust him and he isn’t using us. He forgets about us more than he spends time with us. In fact, this is the most time he has spent with us in a week.”
Nia huffs and goes to the back of my mind to sulk as she stretches like a cat in my mind. She’s definitely ready to be a little harlot.
