Chapter 10 No Greater Sorrow Than a Dead Heart

Finished

The drugs knocked Elowyn out shortly after the stomach pumping. The nurses hooked her up to several monitors. After examining her, Elina left the room. She pulled off her mask, only to hear Jack’s voice ring out harshly, “Are you satisfied now?”

Elina almost laughed. “Are you saying I forced her to overdose?”

“What else?” Jack’s voice was cold. “If you hadn’t threatened her with divorce, she wouldn’t have been driven to this.”

They really blamed everything on me? Elina stared at him. “If she really felt guilty, she would’ve taken more than a few pills. Even without a stomach pump, she wouldn’t have died.”

Based on her preliminary check, it looked like a mix of vitamins and a few undissolved painkillers. Nothing fatal.

“So what, you’re disappointed she didn’t die?” Rowena snapped, storming over with Jaslyn in her arms. “She’s your sister! How can you be so heartless?”

Jaslyn burst into tears. “It’s all Mommy’s fault! Mommy is a wicked witch! I hate you, Mommy!”

Elina’s comforting words caught in her throat. She stared at Jaslyn, feeling utterly crushed.

“You should be glad Elowyn’s okay,” Ronald chimed in coldly. “Even if she weren’t, you wouldn’t get a penny from the inheritance.”

Anger and arguments came from love. Elina, feeling completely abandoned, didn’t even bother replying. The parents she had once adored didn’t become so unfair overnight. The daughter she carried for ten months didn’t suddenly distance herself.

Elina didn’t love Jack that much-leaving him was easy. But her family… they dragged her down again and again. Her stomach churned violently. Listening to Jaslyn cry and watching Jack and her parents’ stern faces filled her with pure disgust.

A nurse, unable to bear it, tried to defend her. “You’re being way too harsh-”

Before she could finish, Elina stopped her. “Go get the discharge papers.”

She didn’t want fairness anymore. She wanted freedom. Freedom from these blind, selfish people. Freedom from wasting any more of her life on them.

After the nurse left, Elina raised her eyes calmly. “The patient is stable now. Watch her diet after she wakes up and there shouldn’t be any issues. One of you should settle the bill. For anything else, talk to the

nurses.

Without another word, she turned and walked away. They all stared blankly after her, even Jaslyn stopped crying for a moment.

But soon, everyone except Jack shifted their attention back to Elowyn and filed into the hospital room.

Out in the hallway, Jack stood there, brows furrowed, staring down the empty corridor where Elina had

vanished. That indifference on her face…it didn’t look fake.

Inside the hospital room, Elowyn looked pitifully at her parents.

“Oh, Elowyn, you’re so foolish. It’s all Elina’s fault. Why punish yourself?” Rowena sighed.

Jaslyn nodded eagerly. “Yeah, it’s all Mommy’s fault. Aunt Elowyn, don’t hurt yourself anymore.”

Just as Jack walked to the bedside, Elowyn started crying.

“If it weren’t for me, Sis wouldn’t have gotten mad at Jack,” she said, looking at Jack with teary, pleading eyes. “Elina didn’t mean what she said. Jack, please don’t take it seriously. Jaslyn still needs her mom.”

“I don’t want her as my mom! I want Aunt Elowyn to be my mommy!” Jaslyn pouted.

Hearing that, Elowyn’s heart filled with secret joy. She gave Jack a pitiful glance, waiting for his response.

“If she wants to scare me with divorce, fine. I’ll give her what she wants.” Jack said grimly.

Does Elina really want a divorce? He didn’t believe it for a second.

If she made such a public spectacle, she needed to pay the price for her recklessness.

Rowena asked carefully, “Are you sure, Jack?”

Seeing him nod, she barely contained her happiness and turned back to Elowyn, her eyes shining.

“Finally! No more evil woman as my mom! Aunt Elowyn, I want you to be my real mom!” Jaslyn exclaimed.

Elowyn blushed and pretended to worry. “Jaslyn, don’t say that. It’ll hurt her feelings.”

She looked up, seeing Jack frowning, lost in thought.

“Mom, you should talk to Elina one more time. Even if we go to the City Hall, there might still be a chance to turn things around.”

This had to succeed. She didn’t actually want a reconciliation; she just wanted Rowena to make sure Elina signed the divorce papers.

Rowena understood immediately. “Don’t worry, I’ll persuade her.”

Following the Ford family’s instructions, Elina had already arranged for another doctor to take over Elowyn’s care.

At eight in the morning, after finishing her shift, Elina left to catch up on sleep. But at her door, she found

an unwelcome visitor.

Rowena stood there, beaming. “After all these years, you finally did something right.”

Elina frowned. “What do you want?”

In her memory, her mother had never smiled at her like this.
