Chapter 13 Mom Is a Nanny
e Finished.
As the words fell, the entire elevator went silent. In the spacious elevator, the four people each wore different expressions. Elina said nothing, but Elowyn gave a dry laugh first and spoke up in an attempt to ease the tension. “Jack, you can’t say that. After all, Jaslyn is born of Elina. Even if she is determined to get a divorce, you can’t strip her of her identity as a mother.”
She sounded like she was speaking for Elina, but her words hinted at Elina’s stubbornness.
Jack’s gaze grew even darker. “She may not even want to be a mother.”
A few words shifted all the blame onto Elina. Elina finally couldn’t hold back anymore. She spoke slowly, “Whether or not I’m Jaslyn’s mother is not for you to decide. But there’s someone here ready to be a stand- in mom, and that’s entirely up to you.”
Ding. The elevator doors opened. Throwing out this biting remark, she walked out without even glancing at them.
Elowyn froze, stomped her foot, and said in a wronged tone, “Why is her mouth so harsh! If she won’t take care of Jaslyn, what’s wrong with me doing it?”
As the elevator doors slowly closed, Jack said indifferently, “Ignore her.”
Not getting any comfort, Elowyn gritted her teeth in anger, but she couldn’t show it on her face. In the reflection of the elevator walls, she saw Jack’s face, colder than ice. He was furious right now. Anyone who crossed him would only be asking for trouble.
But thinking about it, if Elina made him this angry today, then the divorce would be a sure thing.
Elowyn felt much better and even softly comforted him as they exited the elevator, “Jack, don’t be angry anymore. She has always been like this. She even scolds our parents, let alone me.”
Is Elina really such a person? Jack thought for a moment and didn’t speak until they reached the hospital room. “Later, in front of Jaslyn, don’t mention what happened just now,”
On Wednesday, after days of rain, the weather finally cleared up.
Jaslyn was being discharged today. Jack didn’t schedule any work and personally came to pick her up.
As soon as he entered, he saw Elowyn packing things and was slightly dazed, mistaking her for Elina for a brief second.
Elowyn looked up and
gave him a sweet smile. “Jack, you’re here! I thought you might be too busy today”
Jaslyn sat nearby, happily licking the candy she could finally cat. “Daddy, Aunt Elowyn brought it for me!”
“I made it myself with fruit juice. It’s safe,” Elowyn explained at the side, “I know Jaslyn is better now, but she still can’t eat whatever she wants.”
“You’re thoughtful,” Jack said, walking over. “Is everything packed?”
“Yes, but there’s a lot. Should we ask Elina to help carry some of it downstairs?”

Elowyn looked at him, her tone probing.
Hearing this, Jaslyn pouted unhappily. “Why didn’t Mommy come pick me up today? Is Mommy very busy?”
Jack nodded slightly, about to speak when Elowyn beat him to it, “I specially checked. She seems to be on leave today. I even bumped into her in the elevator just now. I thought she was coming to pick up Jaslyn.”
Hearing that, Jaslyn’s little face fell even more. “What’s Mommy doing? She didn’t come to see me these past few days, and now there’s so much stuff. How can Daddy and Aunt Elowyn carry it all?”
In her little heart, Elina was just a nanny to carry things.
Elowyn smiled slightly and gently patted Jaslyn’s head. “Aunt Elowyn can carry it. Aunt Elowyn is a grown- up and very strong.”
“No way,” Jaslyn clung to her. “Aunt Elowyn is too pretty to do a nanny’s job.”
Elowyn looked up and saw Jack’s face full of frustration. With no nanny and Elina throwing a tantrum, if Elowyn hadn’t been helping at the hospital these past few days, he wouldn’t have managed at all.
Seeing that he stayed silent, Elowyn added, “It’s okay. Now that Jaslyn doesn’t have your mommy around, Aunt Elowyn will take good care of you.”
At this, Jack said, “I’ll call Howard.”
Twenty minutes later, coming out of the elevator, Elina saw Howard, and he clearly spotted her too.
“Mrs. Mansor,” Howard greeted with a slight nod, though his gaze was somewhat evasive.
Elina frowned slightly but only said calmly, “I’m no longer Mrs. Mansor. Jack and I are divorced.”
Howard gave an awkward smile. “I forgot, Dr. Ford. Please don’t mind.”
She said nothing and brushed past him, but her mind involuntarily replayed what the police had said.
The hospital had dropped the charges. Besides Elina using it as leverage for the divorce, the bigger issue was that the police found no direct evidence. Even the nanny, Lisa, had vanished.
She had suspected many possibilities but never that Lisa would deliberately feed Jaslyn dairy products against her instructions. Jack’s concealment, Elowyn’s panic, the missing nanny, and Howard’s guilty demeanor.
Their faces flashed one after another in her mind until the hidden thread finally became clear. To help Elowyn, Jack had truly risked even his own daughter’s health.
At this thought, Elina stopped walking. “Dr. Ford, a child suddenly collapsed over there. Please check!”
A nurse’s urgent voice snapped her back to reality. She pushed aside all the messy thoughts and rushed toward the crowd.
“Clear the area! Give the patient space!” She knelt beside the collapsed child, about four or five years old,
