“If Elowyn had married into the Mansor family instead, she probably would’ve helped your father grow the company by now…”
Rowena went on and on, her expression shifting constantly; but Elina didn’t hear a single word of it.
She just stared at her mother’s moving lips, her ears filled with a dull buzzing.
“Since you’ve already landed yourself a benefactor, someone who gave you such an expensive car, even if you can’t help in other ways, you could at least give us some money.”
Rowena finally said what she’d come for. Her tone was flat, her expression calm, as if it were the most natural request in the world.
‘I don’t have money.” Elina raised her eyes and met her gaze. “Since the day I turned eighteen, apart from you covering one year of college tuition, every cent I’ve spent I earned myself. If you’re here to ask for inancial support, go through legal channels.”
Rowena’s face stiffened; she curled her lips in displeasure. “Financial support? Your father and I don’t need your spare change. If the company weren’t struggling, I wouldn’t lower myself to ask you. No, this isn’t asking for money. We raised you. It’s time for you to repay that.”
Elina looked at her and suddenly smiled.
But you still came. I don’t know how the company’s doing now, but I know that when it was doing well, you didn’t give me an extra dime. Now that things aren’t going well, you want me to hand over money? Elowyn’s been working for a while now and spends even more of the family’s money-have you gone to
ler?
If I remember correctly, the man who got her pregnant, the one whose child she aborted-is also a wealthy benefactor. You should be asking her. She’s your good daughter. I’m sure she’d give you anything you asked for.”
The sarcasm in her tone and the look on her face made Rowena’s eyes widen with fury.
What nonsense are you spouting? If you don’t want to give money, just say so. Don’t drag Elowyn into his just to stir up trouble.”
Elina had run out of patience. She took a step back. “First, I don’t have money. Second, even if I did, I wouldn’t give you a cent for no reason. And finally, don’t come to the hospital again. This is a place for reating patients, not for your dramatics.”
With that, she turned and walked away. Rowena stared after her, opened her mouth-but didn’t know
what to say.
‘I always knew you were an ungrateful child. Not even a strand of your sister’s hair could compare. No wonder Jack didn’t give you any money. Once your sister marries into the Mansor family, she’ll have plenty to send home.”
Elina heard her, but felt nothing; she disappeared from Rowena’s sight without a flicker of emotion.

Up on the rooftop, Rowena pulled out her phone. The tight furrow in her brow began to case, but her eyes gleamed with cold malice. If Elina wants to be heartless, then she has no right to expect kindness in return.
The entire incident barely left a mark on Elina’s heart. What concerned her more was the chance the Ford family might start bothering Benjamin. So she instructed the nurses to screen all visitors and completely blocked anyone from the Ford family from entering the room.
Jack knew about it, too. He didn’t say anything, which meant he silently approved of Elina’s decision.
When Elowyn showed up with a meal, she was stopped at the nurses’ station.
“We can take the food in for you, but you can’t enter the room.”
She gripped the handle of the thermal container tightly, frowning. “Who gave you that authority? Do you even know who I am? You dare block me?”
The nurse looked apologetic. “It was the patient’s family who activated visitor screening. The hospital has that feature, and we’re obligated to follow it. Please don’t make this difficult.”
Elowyn glared. “If that’s true, how could I not know about it? It must be Elina. She really thinks that by shutting me out, she can stop me from being a dutiful granddaughter to Mr. Benjamin?”
The nurse blinked, then frowned in disbelief. “What’s your problem? This is standard hospital policy, what does Dr. Ford have to do with it?”
Elowyn didn’t realize her reputation in the hospital had already gone down the drain.
People just hadn’t shown it outright.
