Chapter 54 Take It To The Rooftop

Benjamin’s words clearly signaled a desire to distance himself from Rowena.

29 Finished

Rowena forced a smile. “What are you saying? Even if we don’t see each other often, Jack and Lina have a child together-though now they’ve already…”

Before she could finish, Elina suddenly stood and cut her off. “Mom, grandpa needs to rest. If there’s anything you want to say, you can say it to me.

“Once he’s rested, I’ll pass it along.”

Benjamin turned to look at Elina, his expression a little puzzled. “I’m not tired. What’s going on?”

Elina was worried her mother might let something slip-like the divorce registration with Jack and upset Benjamin.

She tucked the blanket around Benjamin and said gently, “Even if you’re not tired, you still need to rest. Didn’t you say you want to be discharged soon? The better you rest, the faster you’ll recover and be able to go home.”

Her words always seemed to work. Benjamin wasn’t sure what she was up to, but he was happy to

cooperate.

Assuming she wanted to talk to Rowena privately, he nodded. “All right. A little nap does sound nice.”

Benjamin closed his eyes. Rowena opened her mouth to speak, but before she could get a word out, Elina had already grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the door.

‘What are you doing?” The door to the room clicked shut. Rowena shook her off in irritation.

‘I’m not even allowed to have a short chat with Mr. Benjamin? Or are you just trying to use him to hold on o your marriage with Jack?”

Elina didn’t flinch at the accusation; her heart felt nothing.

‘You didn’t come to the hospital to visit grandpa, did you?”

The words left Elina’s mouth cold and sharp, striking straight at the heart of Rowena’s true motive.

‘What nonsense are you spouting?” Rowena frowned deeply. “I’m your mother, and you think I came with an ulterior motive?”

Elina closed her eyes for a moment, then resumed pulling her down the hallway toward the elevators.

“Let go of me, where are you taking me?” Rowena looked at her warily.

“If you think this hallway is a good place to talk, we can stay.”

Elina stopped walking. Sure enough, when she turned to look back, she saw Rowena’s expression shift.

Rowena narrowed her eyes. “I’m your mother. Is this how you talk to me? Fine, then let’s talk in your

office.”

Elina shook her head. “No. The rooftop.”

Whatever Rowena wanted, Elina no longer trusted her.

Her office was private-hers alone-and she had no intention of letting Rowena anywhere near it.

Finishec

Elina’s face was set with determination; for some reason, Rowena suddenly realized that the daughter standing in front of her was no longer so easy to control.

“Fine, the rooftop it is.”

The two of them rode the elevator up in silence.

The early spring wind still carried a biting chill. Once they stepped onto the rooftop, Elina stopped and shoved her hands into her coat pockets.

“Go ahead. What do you want?”

Her voice was flat, emotionless; her expression just as unreadable.

Rowena frowned at her. “Lina, what happened to you? Am I your mother or your enemy?”

Elina’s gaze was as calm and lifeless as a stagnant pond. “I have half an hour before I’m back on duty. I don’t have time for irrelevant questions.”

“Irrelevant?” Rowena fumed, but had no choice but to get to the point. “Back when you married into the Mansor family, your father and I helped you a lot. But you’ve never brought a single project to the family, haven’t given us a cent.”

Elina could already guess her mother’s motive from that hint of complaint in her voice.

But she said nothing; she let Rowena continue.

“Back then, fine, we let it go. Your mother-in-law isn’t exactly easy to deal with, and I figured things were difficult for you in the Mansor family. I understood that you might be walking on eggshells and couldn’t help us. But now that you’ve already divorced Jack, and the assets must’ve been divided, you’re back home now. Don’t you think it’s time to support your own family?”

Rowena’s voice softened a little, her tone painted with concern, as if everything she said came from a place of reason and care.

She reached out to take Elina’s hand-but Elina pulled away.
