Chapter 57 Grandpa, Please Don’t Yell

Finished

Since he thought she could never measure up to Elina, Elowyn no longer saw any point in trying to please him.

While Jack continued trying to soothe Benjamin, she walked over and regretfully closed the lid on the insulated container.

“Jack, if Mr. Benjamin doesn’t want to eat, then let’s just leave it. I’ll make something again when he actually wants it.”

It was clear she simply didn’t want to give it to him anymore, yet the way she said it made it sound like she’d suffered some great injustice because he had refused her kindness.

Benjamin glanced over at her; his expression immediately turned cold.

Elowyn quietly packed up the container and stood beside Jack, her careful, deliberate movements seemingly full of silent sorrow.

“I’m the picky old man with a difficult palate; you’re the one left feeling wronged,” Benjamin said with a mocking smile.

Elowyn clenched her teeth at his words, then forced a smile. “Mr. Benjamin, please don’t say that. This isn’t your fault-it’s mine. I’m simply not as skilled; that’s why I failed to please you.”

“And what does this have to do with skill?” the old man replied coolly, brushing her off with ease. “Is it because I mentioned your sister? Are you jealous?”

Caught off guard, Elowyn opened her mouth to respond but found herself speechless.

Jack stepped in, cutting off the brewing conflict before it escalated.

“Grandpa, maybe don’t tease Elowyn. She’s not like Elina.”

It only took those three words to set Benjamin off.

“Not like her,” he repeated with a snort. “You’re right-Lina is better in every way.”

Jack, of course, understood exactly where Benjamin stood.

He didn’t want to argue with the old man, but neither could he just stand by while Elowyn was attacked.

“Grandpa, please don’t say that. Elina’s greatest talent is putting on an act. She’s fooled even-”

He didn’t finish. The bathroom door suddenly swung open.

Elina walked out, her expression unreadable as she saw the two people standing at Benjamin’s bedside. Without a word, she picked up a cup and walked to Benjamin’s side.

“What are you doing here?” Jack was visibly startled; guilt flickered across his face. Had she heard what I just

said?

Elina didn’t respond. Instead, she turned to Benjamin. “Grandpa, the cup’s been thoroughly cleaned, but I still don’t recommend using it.”

The cup had once belonged to Jack’s grandmother-a priceless treasure in Benjamin’s eyes.

Unfortunately, the nurse hadn’t known that and had used it to hold medication, damaging the already delicate insulation lining.

Benjamin sighed when he heard that. “That cup’s been with me for decades. And now, in the final chapter of my life, even it’s lost its purpose.”

Elina frowned slightly, just about to say something when Elowyn cut in.

“Mr. Benjamin, please don’t say that. You’re going to recover; everything will be fine.”

“I know exactly how my body’s doing,” he snapped. “What I can’t stand is watching someone like you, who knows nothing, spout nonsense like it means something. I’m old, not stupid!”

By now, Benjamin had dropped all pretense; he no longer cared about saving face for anyone.

Elowyn lowered her gaze and leaned slightly against Jack, too afraid to speak again.

“Ugh, Jack!” Benjamin barked just as Jack opened his mouth. “Why did you bring her here? I don’t want to see her ever again. Get her out.”

Tears streamed down Elowyn’s face. “Mr. Benjamin, please tell me what I did wrong. Don’t blame Jack, it’s all because of me…”

She hadn’t finished when Benjamin cut her off, raising his voice. “Shut up. Don’t think I don’t know what you’ve been up to. Get out.”

As his words landed, he began coughing violently.

Elina immediately stepped forward to rub his back, then shot Jack a sharp look. “Get her out.”

Her voice was firm, edged with disgust.

Whether it was aimed at Jack or Elowyn wasn’t entirely clear.

Jack frowned deeply; his heart ached for Elowyn, but he was more worried that Benjamin’s anger would worsen his condition.

He had no choice but to say, “Go home for now. I’ll have Howard take you.”

Elowyn nodded, sniffled softly, and said, “I’ll come visit again next time…”
