The Love I Begged For Was Never Real novel Chapter 540

"Stay safe, Nora! I'm heading out!"

Grabbing her canvas tote bag, Anya jogged through the intensifying wind and climbed into the black sedan.

That left only Nora and Gideon in the shop.

Gideon turned and walked into the hardware store next door. Ten minutes later, he emerged dragging several thick plywood boards and a box of long nails.

"Go sit in the back. Stay away from the door."

Setting the boards against the wall and gripping a claw hammer, he gave Nora the instruction.

Without a word, she walked to the back of the shop and sat down behind the register.

Her severely damaged hands couldn't offer any help anyway, and she had no intention of playing the hero.

She sat quietly in the wicker chair, watching him work alone.

It took him an entire hour to fully board up the two massive display windows.

Plunged into darkness, the only light in the shop now came from a faint sliver creeping in through the back door.

Tossing the hammer aside, Gideon walked over to the sink to wash his hands and haphazardly wiped his face with a paper towel.

"It's not safe here. The elevation is too low. The ocean will flood this street tonight."

He looked at her, his tone dead serious.

"Come back to the villa with me. It's much safer there."

Nora knew exactly how terrible the town's drainage system was. During any major storm, the water on this street would rise past her knees.

She wasn't in a position to be stubborn. She might not care about her own life, but she didn't want to die a meaningless death in a hurricane.
