“Don Massimo,” Luca called seriously. “I said that Joshua Millers-”

“Yes, yes,” Massimo said dismissively. “We can figure out what to do about that later.”

“Massimo,” Luca repeated, “you spent days at that dock asking after two women who went missing. That means there’s plenty of civilians who could easily identify you as someone who went on that cruise.”

“So what?” Massimo asked impatiently.

“If the police find evidence of the mafia meeting on that ship, you’re screwed.”

Massimo thought over Luca’s words. From the police perspective, Massimo would be an easy target–plenty of evidence of him at the scene of the crime would make him a compelling suspect.

If Tyler Morello didn’t get accused as the main culprit, blame would surely fall to Massimo.

But whether or not that happened depended on both how well the other mafia families had covered their tracks and whether they would keep their mouths shut. Were more families allied with Tyler or Massimo? And would anyone stick their neck out for their ally or risk danger to see their enemy taken down?

It probably come down to what angle the police wanted–how the cops came up with their story of the

main crime would decide who would be to blame. The more corrupt cops could find whatever evidence they wanted to fit their story.

Massimo could admit it was a troubling situation to find himself in.

“You should leave,” Lu cleared up.”

Massimo looked at Elena. “I can’t leave her alone.”

“I can watch over her. I’ll update you on her condition as often as you’d like,” Luca offered.

Luca was a competent, trust ally. Massimo had relied on his help countless times. Whenever Massimo needed someone he trusted to do something he couldn’t, he turned to Luca.

Yet Massimo couldn’t leave something so important as Elena’s recovery in Luca’s hands. He knew it was irrational, but Massimo just couldn’t. Massimo needed to be the one to do it.

Massimo shook his head. “It has to be me.”

For the first time in a long time, Massimo saw Luca’s expression of respectful subservience crack. In between shards of calm neutrality, concern and fear slipped out.

“Who do you think the police will blame? Tyler, who’s disappeared to god knows where? A small–time mafia don who half the cruise’s employees can’t even recognize in a crowd?” Luca asked.

Luca took a step forward. His face held anger but also a deep, hurt sadness. “Or the Mafia King–a man they will never be able to catch again?”

Massimo knew his second–in–command–his oldest, most trusted friend–was only trying to help. To make sure Massimo didn’t lose everything he had worked and sacrificed so much for.

But Massimo didn’t care. He wouldn’t be swayed.

“It doesn’t matter,” Massimo declared with an air of finality.
