Chapter 99
Elena had no idea what was happening. She could barely keep her eyes open for a few moments. Even when she did, she had a hard time identifying what was going on.
Once she felt someone strong hold her hand, begging her to stay.
Another time she heard electronic beeping and smelled the familiar scent of antiseptics and other medical cleaning supplies.
She heard a lot of murmuring that she couldn’t make out.
Sometimes she would dream. That was pleasant. Her dreams felt more real than the flashes of consciousness she experienced.
But one dream felt more real than the others.
Every so often, she would wake up and see Massimo peering at her with such unguarded affection that it made her heart melt. He would speak to her in a voice so gentle and soft–a voice she had never heard Massimo ever use before.
He would help her sit up. He would fluff the pillows in her bed. He would carefully feed her bits and pieces of soft foods and help her drink water.
Though it was vivid and life–like, Elena knew it was only a dream. It was all too unbelievable to be true. She would wake up any minute.
But Elena enjoyed the dream all the same.
Massimo waited in Elena’s room at St. Camillus Hospital. It was the best hospital in all of New York, so it was the only place Massimo trusted to take care of Elena. It also helped that St. Camillus was entirely funded by the Ferraro family, so the staff already was trying their best to please Massimo.
They learned very quickly that the best way to do that was to keep Massimo updated on all parts of Elena’s care.
Elena had told Massimo once that she had no love left for her family, so Massimo acted in their stead, making sure Elena’s needs were being met and making medical decisions for her. While he hadn’t gone to medical school, Massimo knew enough to get by. And he hated the thought of letting anything about Elena’s care go wrong.
For the past three days, doctors had scurried in and out. Massimo had stayed by Elena’s side through it all.
He wasn’t sure whether Elena would recover. Her vitals had finally stabilized, but she appeared to be in a coma- like state.
Massimo wanted to be there when Elena finally woke up. She was strong–she had to pull through.
Aria had stopped by now and again to visit Elena. Massimo paid her no mind. She wasn’t the one whose life was in danger–he could safely ignore her.
As far as Massimo was concerned, he had done his duty to protect his wife. He had no more obligations to fulfill.
Aria never stayed for long. It was like the second she realized Massimo wouldn’t give her any attention, she left. But maybe Massimo was just being unkind–perhaps Aria couldn’t bear to see her friend so injured.
Elena had to have surgery to remove the bullet from her stomach. She had needed twenty–six stitches. Beyond that, she had several bruises and a dislocated shoulder.
Those injuries were older. Massimo could make out teeth marks on the bruise at Elena’s collar bone. It was

obvious Tyler had been especially cruel to Elena long before he decided to give Massimo an equally cruel choice.
Massimo felt sick just looking at these wounds, but he refused to be like Aria and leave. It was his fault they had ever gotten there. So it was his job to make sure they healed and fully disappeared.
Massimo didn’t feel very responsible though. He felt irrational. He felt far too emotional.
