Massimo waited impatiently for Elena to recover. He increased her team of doctors to include more specialists, but no one seemed to be as concerned about Elena’s health as Massimo.

When Massimo got short with them, the doctors would always insist that Elena was on a steady upward climb. She was no longer in danger of dying. She was improving!

Then why isn’t she waking up?Massimo would always growl back.

Each individual’s recovery process is different, the general practitioner would reply.

She’s just resting upgive her time, the retired army doctor would say.

Everybody heals better when they’re asleep, the GI specialist would tell him.

It all boiled down to nonsense in Massimo’s mind. And the longer Elena stayed unconscious, the more Massimo worried.

At the same time the doctors preached patience, they warned that they couldn’t be certain if Elena had suffered any long term complications. And no one could know for sure until Elena woke up.

The day after Massimo told Luca he wasn’t leaving, Elena finally improved. She actually woke up.

It was only for a minute, and she only grumbled something as she looked around before falling back asleep.

In the afternoon, Elena woke up again. This time for five whole minutes.

Massimo?she asked. What happened? Where am I?

Tyler shot you,Massimo explained. You’re in the hospital. It’s been-

Elena fell back asleep before he could further explain.

When she woke up in the evening, she asked the same questions. This time she waited until Massimo explained everything before falling asleep. She even requested something to eatoranges.

Not that she got to eat them. She passed out again before M could return with the snacks.

Massimo was relieved Elena had woken upeven if it was only for minutes at a time. But he was nervous over how short these bursts of consciousness lasted.

Again, the doctors were no help. They assured Massimo that it was finethat Elena was improving. They only needed to be concerned if this new behavior lasted more than a week.

Their words did little to comfort Massimo.

But it didn’t matter. How Massimo felt wasn’t important. He needed to focus on Elena.

Massimo got used to treating Elena very gently. She would always repeat the same questions, having no memory of the last time she woke up. It was pretty clear her thoughts were still scrambled.

Once she complained of boredom, so Massimo had books brought inhe knew Elena often spent her days off reading. But she had trouble focusing, so Massimo switched to audiobookseven if she couldn’t pay attention, the narrators at least had soothing voices.

He also had a mini fridge installed. That way Massimo could keep a few of Elena’s favorite drinks and snacks on hand and not miss an opportunity to spend time with her to fetch them.

Massimo missed talking to Elena and working with her, but once he got used to this routine, he found he didn’t hate it. It was hard to be upset when Elena was still alive, smiling at him.

The third day after Elena woke up, Massimo received a call. Elena was still asleep, so he took it.

Don Massimo,Luca said, the police are closing in. They’ve talked to many of the mafia families that were on that cruise. I think they’re stonewalling the cops for now, but the smaller families don’t have the resources or power to hold outsomeone’s going to cave and work with the police.

It’s only a question of who and when, not if,Massimo finished.

They’re going to charge someone soon,Luca warned. They’re keeping a tight lid on the investigation, but it could be anything from conspiracy and racketeering to public endangerment and murder. Given the severity of what they find, you could be facing life in prison.

Massimo knew Luca was telling the truth. If the police were making this much a production of everything, they definitely had some damning evidence. Which meant the potential punishment was going to be severe.

If Massimo stayed, it was only a matter of time before the cops found him. It would only be a matter of time before Massimo was locked up and spent the rest of his life behind bars. The smart move would be to run.

Massimo looked at Elena. She was starting to stir.

Running now would just make me look even more guilty,Massimo said he wasn’t sure if he even believed what he was claiming. Thank you for the warning though. Take care, Luca.

Massimo hung up.

Massimo, what’s going on?Elena groggily asked him. Is it morning? Why are we herewhere are we even?Massimo smiled. I’ll explain over breakfast,he replied gently. What would you like to eat?
