Chapter 102

Luca had been wrong. From his words, Massimo expected to have a few more days before the police showed up at the hospital. Instead they arrived a little over twenty–fours after Luca’s warning.

“This is a hospital. Be quiet,” Massimo chided the officers who had begun to loudly gather outside Elena’s room. They were going to wake her up, which would only make Elena more confused and distressed.

Oddly enough, the cops did pause and fall silent. Then, after another few moments, one pair of footsteps delicately made their way into the room.

Massimo looked away from Elena to meet the eyes of the intruder–Joshua Miller. Of course he had come here in person.

“Massimo Ferraro,” Joshua calmly said, “you are being charged with racketeering, public endangerment, felony murder, abduction, assault and battery, and conspiracy. I suggest you calmly call out and let the police officers outside arrest you.”

Before Massimo could reply, Elena woke up. His instantly switched his focus to her.

“Morning, Elena,” Massimo softly greeted her. “Would you like anything to drink? Something to eat?”

“My head’s killing me,” Elena complained. “Why is my head trying to murder me?”

“Because you’re injured and still recovering,” Massimo patiently explained–like it was the first time he was telling her this, and not the hundredth. “Your pain meds should kick in soon. Drink some water for now.”

Massimo reached for Elena’s glass–already filled and waiting. But Joshua stopped him.

“You’re being arrested, Mr Ferraro,” Joshua said sternly. But he had matched Massimo’s quiet tone–Elena hadn’t heard him, and Massimo was grateful for that.

“Five minutes,” Massimo said. “She’ll only be awake for that long. Then you can arrest me.”

The two men stood silently for a long moment.

“Is everything okay?” Elena asked, trying to sit up in her hospital bed. “What’s going on?”

Massimo stared at Joshua. Slowly, the prosecutor nodded and stepped away from Massimo.

“Five minutes,” he whispered back.

Massimo retrieved the water glass and returned it to Elena. “Just getting you some water,” he said. “Now drink that and then tell me what you feel like eating.”

Massimo mentally counted down the seconds as he prepared a simple fruit tray for Elena and watched her eat. When he got to four minutes, he looked at Elena and steeled himself.

He took in every line of her face as if he might never see it again. He memorized the brilliant way her eyes lit up as she praised the freshness of the fruit. He burned the image of her smile into his mind so he could never forget it.

All too soon, Elena began to fall asleep. Massimo quickly removed the tray and dishes. He tucked Elena into her hospital bed gently.

The moment her eyes closed, Massimo extended his hands to Joshua. The lawyer pulled out a pair of handcuffs and slipped them onto Massimo’s wrists.

Wordlessly, the two walked out and towards the waiting army of police officers.

Elena woke with a fright. The last thing she remembered was Tyler shooting her–she must’ve passed out.

Elena pushed off her covers and examined her wounds. She had gotten stitches–had a doctor already removed the bullet? Looking around at her surroundings, Elena figured that was likely–she was in a hospital room after all.

“Oh,” a nurse said suddenly, “you’re awake. Do you know where you are?”

Elena looked around the room once more. It felt familiar.

“St. Camillus,” she finally answered. She had once worked here and had to monitor patients in rooms just like this

one.

The nurse looked surprised. He walked up to Elena and quickly examined her.

“You’re a lot more present today.”
