Chapter 103

Elena didn’t waste a moment. She got out of the hospital as soon as she could. As a doctor, she knew they could no longer keep her there without her permission.

And the only place Elena wanted to be in that moment was by Massimo’s side.

Elena hailed a cab to the local courthouse. She didn’t have a plan. She just knew she had to find Massimo–and quickly.

Once at the courthouse lobby, Elena spotted a familiar face.

“Luca!” she called out to Massimo’s second–in–command.

Luca stopped in his tracks. He looked at her oddly and in disbelief. “Elena?”

Elena quickly caught up to him. “Where’s Massimo’s trial taking place? What’s even happening?”

Luca sighed, shaking his head. “It’s happening in Chamber Four–follow me.”

He walked slower now–no doubt for Elena’s sake. She was grateful. According to her hospital records, she hadn’t used her legs for this long for many days now.

“The good news,” Luca states suddenly, “is that the Ferraro family does have a lauror on retainer–on hold, I

mean–just in case something like this happens. It’s been a while since we’ve had to use him and he’s gotten older, but he was a force not to take lightly when he was in his prime. At the very least, we should be able to drag this case out if we need to find… extra–legal solutions.”

Elena understood Luca’s meaning and nodded.

Luca opened the chamber door for Elena and guided her to the viewing gallery–where people who weren’t involved directly in the trial could watch.

“Are you alright, Elena?” Luca asked suddenly.

“I’m sore all over, but okay,” Elena admitted. “Wait–how’s Aria? Is she okay?”

Luca shrugged. “She insisted on leaving the hospital early, so I can’t say for sure. Her cousin picked her up not a full day after she first was rescued, though I didn’t get to meet them. And with everything going on, I haven’t bothered to look into the hospital’s records of her injuries.”

Elena was surprised. She didn’t know Aria had family so close by. “If she’s with someone who cares about her, that’s good at least,” she said.

Those words made her remember that Aria was Massimo’s wife–even if Massimo was planning to divorce her. Between getting kidnapped and then having her husband on trial, she must be having a hard time.

“Aria hasn’t stopped by while Massimo was… ah, preparing for the trial?” Elena asked suddenly.

“She visited once–when he was first arrested,” Luca stated bluntly. “I wasn’t there for their conversation, but, judging by how upset she looked and how quickly she left, Massimo probably hurt her feelings somehow.”

That made sense to Elena. When backed into a corner, Massimo always seemed to revert to bad habits. She could easily imagine him saying something while tired and stressed in a jail cell–completely cut off from everyone who cared about him.

She wondered if he was getting enough sleep. If he was keeping up with his meals.

At that moment, the door swung open.

Elena expected to see the judge. She longed to see Massimo. But the person who walked through the door was none other than Joshua Miller.

“Don’t tell me…” Elena whispered.

“He’s the prosecutor for the case,” Luca whispered back.

Elena got up from her seat. She walked over to the prosecutor’s table where Joshua was unpacking his briefcase. Since neither the judge nor Massimo was here, Elena figured she could approach Joshua–even though he was technically at work.

Joshua spotted her before she could say a word. His eyes were instantly filled with joy.
