Elena looked around the courtroom, hoping to see Massimo.
Instead, she saw that the audience was mostly filled with reporters and journalists. But those who weren’t clearly with the press weren’t even recognizable to Elena–which meant there were no mafia members watching.
That struck Elena as odd. The Don of All Dons being on trial was a big deal. Every family should have sent a representative–if not to show support for the Mafia King than to gather gossip.
But there was no one from the mafia world besides Elena and Massimo’s second–in–command. What did that mean?
Was Massimo’s popularity among the mafia declining? Has news of his arrest and trial not spread yet? Elena was perplexed.
In this moment, Elena understood a new angle to the cruelty of the mafia. She knew Massimo took great pains to lead everyone–she had seen how he never ordered his men to do something he wouldn’t do himself. Massimo rushed into the same danger he led his men into, and he took care of them–Elena could think of several times when Massimo had sent her to look after rather unimportant mafia soldiers.
Massimo really cared about the people he was in charge of. And yet, the only people who seem to care about Massimo right now–when he really needed them–was his doctor and his second–in–command.
It felt too unfair.
The judge finally entered and took his seat. Elena didn’t recognize him either. He didn’t have any mafia ties then.
Elena wondered if that, too, was good or bad. Did he hold any prejudice in his heart towards mafia members? Would he convict Massimo just because he was the Mafia King–even if there was no evidence that he did anything wrong?
Elena couldn’t help but worry.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Luca look at her strangely. Elena couldn’t blame his unspoken judgment. She knew she was acting more than a little strangely.
Elena had woken up from the hospital less than an hour ago. Yet she rushed over to the courthouse without a second thought.
She hadn’t even taken off her hospital gown! Elena had just put on the jeans she had arrived in–still caked with dust from her warehouse rescue–and shoved on a jacket over it. She hadn’t even bothered to put on socks or tie her sneakers properly.
But Elena couldn’t help it. Massimo had helped her escape from her family and Tyler Morello countless times now. He allowed her to practice medicine in new and exciting ways.
She knew being Massimo’s doctor wouldn’t last. She’d get too injured one day, or maybe Massimo would end her work contract when he finally found a male doctor who could match Elena’s own talents.
But that didn’t mean Elena didn’t owe a lot to Massimo. So she wanted to be here in the courtroom for him–just like Massimo had been there for Elena whenever she ran into trouble.
With a loud thud, the door opened once more. Massimo entered the courtroom.
Massimo was glad that his lawyer–a Mr. Dan Barbieri–had convinced the court to let him change out of prison clothes and into one of his suits. While Luca had talked constantly about how they needed to be prepared for the
