Elena was shocked to hear Massimo’s list of charges stated so plainly by Joshua. There were the usual things any mafia man could be accused of–running illegal businesses, endangering the public, and engaging in violent activities. But there was one crime Elena had never expected to hear.
“And finally, I will prove to the court during this trial that Massimo Ferraro intended to kill Elena Vitale on the cruise ship where so many of his crimes became too obvious too ignore,” Joshua stated calmly.
Elena couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Why was Joshua so convinced Massimo wanted her dead? He hadn’t even wanted her to step foot on that cruise!
As Elena watched the trial continue, she couldn’t help but notice that Joshua did have evidence against Massimo. She got lost by some of the legal terms he used, but the evidence he presented often spoke for itself.
Joshua started by submitting a large series of recordings from a secret police stakeout. The dates struck Elena as familiar, but it wasn’t until Joshua showed the court pictures of the white van the police had used that Elena put the facts together. Joshua was the man that she had chased out of the Ferraro estate so long ago!
He had been spying on the Ferraro estate until Elena had spotted him wearing clunky headphones–an older model used to listen in on bugs placed around the estate, as Joshua now explained. Elena couldn’t help but feel angry. She wished more than anything that she could go back in time and catch Joshua in the act instead of letting him get away.
Because apparently Massimo and his second–in–command hadn’t noticed the bugs around the estate soon enough. The police devices had recorded plenty of mafia men—including Massimo himself–talking about running their underground criminal empire.
Massimo’s lawyer, Mr. Barbieri, was at least fighting hard for Massimo. Elena was nervous seeing such an old man defending her boss–he looked older than Mr. Fabio after all. With his balding white hair and plenty of wrinkles, Elena doubted if the man was as capable as Luca had reported.
But once the trial began, Mr. Barbieri fought tirelessly for Massimo. Every time Joshua pointed out a damning line of recorded conversation, Mr. Barbieri was quick to ask for proof that any of the crimes were actually committed.
“The prosecution has shown no evidence beyond some meaningless words,” Mr. Barbieri passionately argued. ” Where’s the proof that my client was talking about committing real crimes and not just discussing movies or videogames with friends?”
Elena wondered if the judge would really be swayed by these kinds of arguments though. With Massimo’s serious expression and stern way of talking, it was hard to believe he was the sort of man to get lost in friendly games.
Beyond that, Elena wondered how Joshua was going to claim Massimo wanted to kill her. The only obvious answer she could think of was to blame Massimo for the game of Russian Roulette. But surely Joshua couldn’t blame Massimo without blaming the nearly hundred of mafia men who actually voted for Elena to play that dangerous game?
It was ridiculous. Massimo had been looking out for her. He had done everything he could without ignoring mafia law.
If only Joshua would see that.
Too soon, the judge called a break for lunch. Elena made polite conversation with Luca, but it’s clear neither of their hearts were in it. They were both too worried for Massimo.
“Let’s go find him,” Luca finally suggested. “I think I have an idea where they might be.”
