“That doesn’t mean she should be here,” Massimo shot back.

Elena frowned. “You shouldn’t be on trial at all,” Elena countered. “So I guess we’re even.”

Massimo didn’t take the easy w

out Elena had provided. Instead he dug his heels in and shook his head.

“Luca,” Massimo growled, turning to his second–in–command, “you should take her back to the hospital. There’s

no way she’s fully recovered from her kidnapping yet. Or have her stay at the estate if you think it’s too dangerous

for her to be somewhere public.”

Elena and Luca shared a look. She silently pleaded at Massimo’s right hand man. Massimo needed all the support he could get right now–Elena hoped Luca understood that much at least.

“Sir,” Luca began, “since Elena is awake now, she’s the only person who can make medical decisions for herself. If I were to force her back to the hospital or the Ferraro estate, it would only further ruin your image.”

Massimo sighed. Luca shot Elena a sly smile as Massimo looked away in annoyance. Elena smiled back.

Elena turned to the lawyer. “So how likely is it that Massimo ends up in jail?” Elena asked.

“Most of the crimes they’re pinning on him we can make go away,” Mr. Barbieri explained. “There’s not enough evidence, so we can get the charges dismissed or work their punishments down to just a slap on the wrist–like paying a small fine.”

Elena let out a sigh. “That’s a “f.”

But Mr. Barbieri didn’t copy her expression. In fact, his smile finally dropped from his face as he got very serious.

“The cruise ship charges are the most dangerous,” the lawyer confessed. “It carries the harshest punishments, and that’s where the prosecution has his best evidence against Massimo.”

“Really?” Elena asked. “But how?”

“The civilians who were on the cruise ship,” Luca cut in. “The employees all saw Massimo and could easily identify him. Between those eye witnesses and the civilian passengers, there’s plenty of people who have no reason to hide that Massimo was there.”

Luca looked seriously at Massimo, but Massimo held his gaze with an uninterested expression. Elena figured this must be a point that’s been discussed a lot between the two.

“And then there’s the mafia members,” the lawyer brought up. “Given how cagey Joshua Miller has been about some key witnesses, I bet the cops got a member or two to agree to be part of the case–which would be even more damning for us.”

Elena was shocked. No mafia member would work with the police if they could help it. The idea of testifying against the Don of All Dons went against everything the mafia stood for!

Unless, of course, it was a mafia member who held a grudge against Massimo. Then Elena could understand some families deciding that the public evidence of their betrayal was worth the price of taking control away from the Mafia King.

“Even if I’m wrong, there’s still plenty of physical evidence to worry about,” Mr. Barbieri continued. “The police retrieved bullet casings and retrieved the gun they were fired from. There’s even rumors that they found one of the bullets that were fired into the ocean–and it’s fully intact, too!”
