“She’ll do no such thing,” Massimo immediately objected.

“Sir,” Luca said softly, “don’t you think that-”

“It’s a terrible idea,” Massimo protested. “Elena can’t lie on the witness stand–she doesn’t have the training to even if she could. She could easily say something that will hurt my case.”

“I would never,” Elena countered.

“Really?” Massimo shot back. “Have you never seen me use a gun? Would you deny the rumors that I’ve rarely kept the company of women or claim that I’ve never said a misogynistic statement?”

Elena hesitated. Massimo nodded, as if he had expected as much.

“From there,” Massimo argued, “it will be easy for Joshua to claim I hate all women or wouldn’t hesitate to kill one.”

“I could raise objections if Joshua tries to use rumors as fact,” Mr. Barbieri stated suddenly. “Other questions I could get the judge to dismiss as irrelevant to the case.”

Mr. Barbieri looked directly at Elena. “We can dance around those negative topics while still making sure you never lie that you only clear Massimo’s name using the truth. If that’s something you want to do.”

Elena only had to think about Mr. Barbieri’s offer for a minute. She had been in far more dangerous situations— testifying that Massimo was innocent was, compared to getting shot at or abducted by mafia men, safe and easy to

“I’ll testify,” she said.

The lawyer smiled. “Then it’s settled.”

Massimo frowned, clearly annoyed. “She shouldn’t attend the trial at least,” he continued. “The prosecution might realize she’s a witness then.”

“Joshua is pretty smart,” Mr. Barbieri agreed. “Maybe it is best to keep the ace up our sleeve hidden for now.”

“Only if I get updates on the case,” Elena insisted.

Massimo nodded. “Luca can do that.”

“Sir, do I need to remind you I’m running your empire, dodging police, and trying to handle any rumors about your court case?” Luca asked. “I know this is all second nature to you, but I barely have time to attend your trials.”

Mr. Barbieri snapped his fingers. “I have a police buddy who owes me a favor. I can get your phone back at the end of trial days,” Mr. Barbieri suddenly explained.

“You want me to send the updates?” Massimo asked in disbelief. “There’s no time for that. I’m taken to the prison too quickly and I can’t be seen with a contraband cell phone on me.”

“I’ll just stretch out our little trial debriefs,” Mr. Barbieri replied. “Then I take your phone, return it to my friend, and we can do the whole thing over again the next day. Simple, right?”

Massimo sighed for a long moment before finally agreeing.

The days passed as the trial dragged on. Elena ended up going back to work at the Ferraro estate rather quickly. With Luca filling in for Massimo, Elena ended up working not as a doctor but as Luca’s second–in–command.

She mostly collected information from other mafia families in New York. She kept an eye on reports from big mafia families out of state, but with how chaotic everything was, it was more important to appear put together for their allies–or potential enemies–that were so close to the Ferraro’s main territory.

“You’re a natural at this,” Luca praised. “You’re really picking all of this up very quickly.”

“You’re a great teacher,” Elena replied.

It was definitely difficult work to stay on top of tributes, disputes, reports of trouble, and ways to resolve any problem, but compared to her work as a doctor, it wasn’t that much more difficult. Elena thought of it as treating a particularly ill patient who suffered from many illnesses–she just had to keep from getting overwhelmed and stay focused on the most pressing, dangerous symptom and treat them one at a time.

Of course, it was easier to focus on mafia work after Elena received her daily text from Massimo. He always tried to keep things brief, but Elena would fiercely drag as many details out of him as she could.
