Elena took a deep breath and explained her time on the cruise ship from her perspective. She skipped over how Massimo had gotten drunk and what came after, but otherwise she tried to be as objective as possible.
Elena told everyone in the courtroom how it was the other gathered mafia men who had decided that she had to play Russian Roulette–that such a dangerous game had never even been considered by Massimo until they suggested it. She explained that once the gathered dons had made their decision, no one person could object to it.
“Massimo gave me advice and comfort as I
for the worst,” Elena finally stated.
“And I would like to remind the court that my client has not “Thank you for your testimony,” Mr. Barbieri sta been charged for Ms. Elena’s disappearance, solely her near death experience on the cruise. But, if the prosecution insists on bringing that up, I will point to the fact Ms. Elena was being treated at my client’s hospital until her injuries healed–hardly the care one would expect from a kidnapper.”
Mr. Barbieri smiled harshly at Joshua.
Joshua frowned. He turned his attention to Elena. “The prosecution would like to cross–examine the witness,” he declared.
The judge shook his head. “It’s getting quite late. We’ll pick this back up tomorrow–you can ask Ms. Elena Vitale all the questions you want then.”
With the swing of his gavel, the judge dismissed the court.
By the time Elena was able to meet back up with Massimo and his lawyer, she saw that the two were already arguing.
“You’ve already overstepped enough,” Massimo was saying. “I didn’t give you permission to bring up her hospital stay.”
“You worry about the wrong things,” Mr. Barbieri replied. “If I hadn’t mentioned that, the judge would be thinking about Joshua’s comment for the whole trial. And this new idea-”
“It’s a terrible idea,” Massimo interrupted.
“It would clear your name easily!” the lawyer protested.
At that moment, Massimo looked Elena’s way. She waved as she approached them.
“What’s going on?” Elena asked.
“Well Massimo-”
“Nothing,” Massimo cut off. “Just a potential plan that we won’t be doing.” Massimo glared at his lawyer.
11 he Mr. Barbieri lifted his hands in the air. He looked slyly at Elena before grinning. “I’ll give you two a moment, said, leaving the two alone.
“Are you doing okay?” Elena asked hesitantly. “You don’t look like you’ve been getting much sleep.”
“I’m fine,” Massimo replied hesitantly. He looked Elena over slowly. “You look better.”
“I told you, I’m practically all healed up.”
“That’s good.”

A quiet drifted over them. Had it always been so awkward between them? Elena couldn’t think of a single thing to
say.
At that moment, Massimo’s second–in–command came over. “You were both great today,” Luca greeted them.
“I should get going,” Massimo said suddenly.
“Already?” Elena asked.
Massimo only nodded. Had he always been so closed off? Elena couldn’t help but frown as Massimo moved to find his lawyer.
“If you’re free, Elena,” Luca said suddenly, “there’s a few business matters I wanted your opinion on.” Elena watched Massimo get further and further away from her. She sighed. “Okay,” she agreed.

It took another hour before Luca and Elena agreed on how to handle the latest problems popping up in the mafia world. The sun had already set. As she exited the building, Elena saw Joshua also heading out for the evening. “Elena,” he said kindly, “I didn’t expect you to still be here. Would you like to get dinner–my treat, of course.” “I don’t know if that’s the best idea,” Elena shot back. “Sitting and eating together wouldn’t be appropriate, given the fact we’re on opposite sides of an ongoing trial.”
“Then let’s get something from one of the food trucks across the street,” he offered.
Elena hesitated. While she prepared a lot for giving testimony for today, she had completely forgotten to make dinner plans. She doubted there was anything dinner–worthy at home.
“Alright,” she agreed.
Each armed with a hot dog and a soda, Elena and Joshua stood next to the food truck. It was a little awkward, but Elena was just happy to have warm food.
“Remember when we used to get lunch like this after school?” Joshua asked. “In the spring, there would always be a food truck close by, and we’d grab a soda or fries for our walk home”
“It was nice,” Elena admitted. That walk back home was one of the few times Elena wasn’t being watched by her family–the closest she could get to a taste of freedom.
