Chapter 115
Elena awoke to her work phone ringing in the middle of the night. Though it had been quite some time since that had happened, Elena still answered.
“I thought we were done with midnight phone calls,” Elena said sleepily.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Massimo replied. “Come to the estate. I have an urgent job for you.”
Elena quickly arrived at the Ferraro estate. A servant led her to a side room she hadn’t been to before.
The room looked more like a secret meeting area or perhaps a room to play poker or some other game. The room itself was small by Ferraro standards, but it still easily fit six chairs around a circular table. While the furniture was simple, the walls were covered in classical paintings.
But Elena barely paid attention to any of that. In one of the chairs was a man who had several bruises and cuts across his face and arms. More importantly, he had what Elena guessed was a bullet wound in his stomach.
Standing above the man was Massimo. “I prepared some tools for you,” he said, pointing at the table.
Under other circumstances, Elena would have thanked him, but she didn’t have the time. She had to work quickly.
Massimo wasn’t worried. The moment he saw Elena’s jaw set and that determined look enter her eyes, he knew his man would be okay.
Which meant Massimo could focus on other matters. Massimo looked down at the injured man and held his gaze.
“You said you were attacked. Who attacked you?” Massimo asked.
“I, I don’t know,” the man confessed in shaking breaths.
Massimo frowned. “I asked you to defend the very borders of Ferraro territory because I thought you were capable. Clearly I was mistaken.”
Elena let out a sigh as she cleaned out the man’s wounds. Massimo could tell she was trying very hard to block out this conversation–was it because she needed to focus or she didn’t like what Massimo was saying?
“Sir!” The man tried to lurk to attention, but Elena’s hands kept the weakened man contained.
“Sir,” the man repeated. “I took this mission very seriously–so did all the others you picked.”
“Then prove it,” Massimo replied.
Elena glared at Massimo. That answered Massimo’s question–she didn’t like how he was speaking to his lackey apparently.
“There’s a group, sir,” the man finally said. “Up near the border with Canada, there’s a mafia family called the Marinos making deals with other members and then completely breaking them. They were… screwing over everyone, sir.”
“Do you have any proof?” Massimo asked harshly. His hands were tied if there was no evidence–he couldn’t start a gang war over nothing.
“We were meeting up with an informant,” the man explained. “Someone who was working with the mafia family behind the bogus deals. But then ten minutes in, we got jumped.”
Massimo paused as he took the story in. The only sound was Elena carefully sewing up the man’s bullet wound.

“I take it everyone else is dead,” Massimo stated.
The man nodded. “I, I tried to get the informant out, but he was gunned down. I barely got out at all.”
Elena washed the blood off her hands. She had successfully treated Massimo’s man–he would live, Massimo had one of the servants prepare a room for the injured patient.
“So what’s the plan?” Elena asked Massimo.
“From the reports he sent Luca, it looks like this is a small family trying to grab more power,” Massimo explained. “But we have their estate address–it looks like a small place in Maine.”
“Which means we can investigate them and find some evidence of their crimes,” Elena continued.
Massimo nodded. “We should leave tonight. It’ll be a long drive, but they won’t expect us to be there so soon. And they sure as hell won’t expect us to come by car.”
“Sounds good to me,” Elena replied with a smile.
It was only once Elena entered Massimo’s car that she realized she hadn’t had to fight with Massimo to be taken with. Perhaps he was finally beginning to see her true worth. Elena couldn’t stop smiling.
But even a good mood can die after an hour of silence. And after an hour of silence, even Elena’s manners couldn’t stay perfectly intact. She reached for the radio dial.
“Don’t bother,” Massimo told her. “It’s broken.”
“Your radio’s broken?” Elena repeated. “You’re rich–why haven’t you fixed it yet?”
“I don’t listen to much music,” Massimo explained. “And talk shows are annoying.” Elena snorted. “You must’ve been a wonderful child to take on road trips.”
