Chapter 116
“I wouldn’t know. I never went on one.”
“Really?” Elena couldn’t help but be surprised. “Not even for mafia business?”
“My parents were dead at that point,” Massimo explained bluntly. “And my grandfather wisely decided having other dons visit us was less dangerous. Of course I traveled by plane for very important meetings, but I assumed that doesn’t count as a road trip.”
Elena nodded. “You would have to travel the open road, not the open sky.”
“And you?” Massimo asked.
“I told you already I don’t have any ties to my family
Elena said. “And the cracks in everything started when I
was very young, so no, I didn’t go on any family road trips either.”
“Was that because of the second marriage?” Massimo asked suddenly.
“What?”
“I hear remarriages lead to unhappy children,” Massimo stated plainly. “And your father took a second wife and then had another child with her.”
Elena sighed. “I know you had to do a background check on me, but you don’t have to talk about my life like you’re giving a school report.”
Elena thought for a moment on whether she should leave the conversation there.
“And the problems started with my mother,” Elena continued. “She managed to escape the mafia life. My dad turned into a bastard after that.”
Massimo didn’t say anything. With his eyes on the road, it was hard for Elena to get a good read on his emotions.
“I know that makes her a traitor,” Elena said, “but I think she had more strength than my father did. He only ever cared about money and power–he’s a coward at his core. But my mom had beliefs she wouldn’t give up—she could make the hard choices no one else could.”
“Like leaving you,” Massimo said. He didn’t say it unkindly. He just spoke in that naturally cold tone of his.
Elena nodded. “Like leaving,” she repeated.
“I come from a family line of people falling disgustingly in love,” Massimo confessed.
Elena laughed. “Is that so?”
“My grandfather and grandmother were high school sweet hearts. After she passed, my grandfather swore to never take another lover,” Massimo explained. “He hasn’t even looked at another woman his age since her funeral.
“That’s intense.”
“My grandfather is intense about everything,” Massimo said. “Everything needs to be to his exacting standards.”
“That sounds fun,” Elena added sarcastically. “My father is the same way. I suspect he wanted to mold me into the perfect bride as much as your grandfather wanted to mold you into the perfect Mafia King.”
“Most likely,” Massimo agreed. “Only my grandfather was far more competent than your father will ever be.”

Elena laughed again.
“What about your parents?” Elena asked.

“Never got to really meet them,” Massimo said coldly. “They died when I was young, but from what my grandfather has said, they were incredibly in love, too.”
Elena hummed. “I wonder what makes for a good relationship. Beyond just loving each other, I mean.”
Elena hadn’t directed her question at Massimo. It was more of an idle musing–she didn’t expect to get an answer from the notorious cold–hearted mafia don.
“Love is important,” Massimo replied. “Because for a relationship to work, you need to want it to work–and for that to be true, you have to be madly in love with someone.”
Elena fell asleep halfway into their drive. Massimo decided against waking her.
Elena was right—he had done a background check on her. But it left out so many details.
Massimo never would have learned how deeply her scars from her terrible childhood with her family ran if he hadn’t heard Elena explain her upbringing. He never would have learned how Elena really felt about her mother. He never would have learned how, despite her optimism, she had a hard time thinking about love beyond an abstract concept.
