Massimo and Elena looked at each other and quickly got out of the car. Massimo drew his own gun as he stalked to the house’s side door. Elena held her breath as she silently followed behind.
Massimo tried the handle–the door was unlocked. He darted inside, keeping his gun raised.
As they entered, Elena could hear the gunfight more clearly. Only a few shots had been fired–it sounded like whoever was involved had switched to more physical blows. Luckily, the fighting seemed to be coming from a
room or two over.
The room Elena and Massimo had entered was the kitchen. It was dark and Massimo made no move to turn on any lights. While Elena was focused on listening for the fight, Massimo stalked around the room, looking around for trouble.
“It’s clear,” Massimo whispered. “But stay low–based on the schematics we have, they’re probably fighting in the dining room.”
Massimo gestured to the other door on the opposite side of the room. Elena debated getting closer to see if she could get more information, but she didn’t need to.
From beyond the door, several men shouted and cursed out each other. It wasn’t perfectly coherent, but Elena got the broad strokes—a family, likely the one Massimo had been investigating, had broken some kind of deal, which led to someone dying or being out of lots of money or maybe both? It seemed the offended party was going to settle the score.
Massimo listened silently to the unfolding chaos. He couldn’t get a good look into the dining room without revealing himself to the fight. That would risk a few stray bullets or knives coming his way.
Massimo wasn’t unused to pain–the idea of getting injured didn’t bother him. But while he was fine with risking his own life, he didn’t want to risk Elena’s.
Still he couldn’t stand here and do nothing.
Massimo sighed. “I should have brought more gear,” he muttered. “Or at least the schematics.”
Elena looked around the room. “This place reminds me of my childhood home,” she said suddenly. “I wonder…” While Massimo would have loved to learn more about Elena’s past, now really wasn’t the time. He turned around to face her–only to find that she was crouched on the ground, slowly feeling along the walls.
“What are you doing?” Massimo asked in a monotone voice.
“My father’s house has old vents connecting the rooms,” Elena explained. “I wonder if this place has them, too.”
Elena walked further away from him in her search. She finally stopped next to a small bookshelf. “Here,” she hissed.
Massimo walked over. Elena was pointing at the wall–in particular, a small grate no bigger than his hand at the bottom of the wall. Sounds of the brawl lazily floated through.
Massimo hummed. “Good find,” Massimo whispered, “but how does this help us?”
Elena grinned back at Massimo. She opened up her medical bag.
“How many men do you think are out there?” she asked.
“At least twenty,” Massimo responded automatically. “But there’s likely more injured who will only put up a fight

if anyone gets close.”
“Which means we’re badly outnumbered,” Elena explained. “We won’t win in a fair fight.”
“Who said anything about fighting fair?” Massimo asked.
“No one did.” Elena picked out the supplies she needed, showing them off to Massimo. “I have all the ingredients for sleeping gas right here.”
Massimo stared at Elena for a long moment. “That would take too long and be just as risky to administer. I might as well go in there and join the firefight.”
Elena shook her head. “I’m not suggesting that I treat people one by one with this. If I slip the gas through the grate, the dining room will slowly fill up with the sleeping gas and we can knock everyone out at once.”
“Then we can take our time investigating in peace,” Massimo finished. “It’s a good plan–but the dining room needs to be sealed for it to work.”
Elena frowned. That was true–an open window or an unlocked door could completely ruin the plan.
Massimo slipped back to the exit door. “I’ll make sure they stay trapped. You focus on making and releasing the sleeping gas.”
Elena wanted to protest Massimo’s dangerous mission, but they really didn’t have the time. The longer the fight dragged on, the more people got injured–and the more likely the fight broke out from the dining room and spilled over to the kitchen. This was the safest option.
