Chapter 124
“But,” Massimo continued harshly, “they were barely on decent terms with us when my father was alive. Now they’re polite and formal, but they’re certainly not strong allies.”
Elena would not be swayed. “That’s why you need to change that. The Contis have under them–they could easily help make sure Tyler isn’t causing trouble.”

“Just because you’ve made peace with your brother doesn’t mean I have to do the same with my cousins,” Massimo bit back.
But even though Massimo was reluctant, he knew Elena was right. It was smarter to get one powerful family firmly on his side than try to get a dozen smaller families. And if he could patch things up with the Contis, other families would see how powerful Massimo was.
“I suppose I can invite them to the estate,” Massimo finally relented. “But it’s up to them whether they accept it or not.”
Elena gathered the materials to make handwritten invites to the Conti family. Older mafia families preferred the old ways, and the Contis were even older than the Ferraros. Elena was very glad she had practiced her penmanship skills thoroughly back in school–it was certainly coming in handy now.
“I know the last don from the Contis was a traitor, but they’ve cleaned house afterwards,” Elena explained. “Luca and I checked into the matter during your trial. It seems like the wrong person got in power and made the family suffer, but now they’re behaving like a model mafia group.”
“There’s more to it than that,” Massimo replied. He took one of the invitations Elena had wrote and dutifully signed his name.
“Oh?”
“My grandfather has many flaws,” Massimo said with a wry smile. “My father was his favorite child, and that fact was well known to everyone. Because of his foolishness, our families ended up splintering and relations got… tense.”
Massimo grabbed an envelope for the signed letter. As Elena continued to write invitations, Massimo carefully signed and sealed them.
Elena didn’t dare say another word. Though she was curious, she didn’t want to cross any

“Giuseppe trying to kill me was an escalation of course,” Massimo said, “but it is a symptom of that splintering. Normally the Contis are merely slow to respond to my request. Sometimes they act a little haughty or petty, too.”
“That’s terrible,” Elena said quietly. She might not have a happy family, but at least she could say her father has never tried to kill her.
Massimo, however, did not seem affected in the slightest by this confession. His stone face remained unchanged.
“It isn’t great,” Massimo agreed. His voice was cold. “Even if they seem to have changed, it might just be for appearances–this relationship might be too broken to repair.”
“That’s not fair,” Elena defended. “You’re not your father or your grandfather. They should know that.”
“Yes, but I am an only child, so I can’t begin to understand what problems they’ve dealt with,” Massimo replied. ” And if I can’t empathize with them, I doubt I can make a compelling deal for their support.”
Despite his words, Massimo continued to work on the invitations with Elena. When they were all done, Elena
