Chapter 134
“What are you doing?” Elena asked.
“I’ll sleep on the floor,” Massimo replied simply.
“Are you crazy?” Elena asked. “You can’t do that. It’s so unhealthy.”
“They clean the suites thoroughly,” Massimo said.
“But sleeping on even a clean floor is bad for you. It can cause all sorts of back problems, not to mention-”
“Elena,” Massimo said harshly, cutting her off.
Massimo took a deep breath. He didn’t need to get cross with his ally right now. They were both tired and needed to get some rest.
“I don’t want to cross any lines,” Massimo continued. “Won’t you feel uncomfortable sleeping to a man who isn’t your husband? This is the best, professional option.”
Massimo watched Elena go from hesitant to guilty to hesitant again. After a long moment, she finally voiced her thoughts.
“It’s fine,” Elena said. “So long as we sleep on separate sides of the bed, I mean. That should be…okay.”
Elena was regretting her words. She was curled on the far opposite side of the bed, every muscle tensed. She had been like that for the past twenty minutes or so–there was no way she was getting any sleep tonight.
Elena was just too aware of how much space was between herself and Massimo. The bed was deceptively big- even leaving as much room as possible, she could still make out every single one of his breaths. She could feel each slight movement of his limbs as they shook the mattress every so slightly.
She could see his back facing her. She could see every trace of muscle through the thin white shirt he wore to bed. Elena had almost forgotten how healthy and active Massimo was–his usual suits partially hid the true extent of how ripped he was.
Elena didn’t want to focus on that. Massimo was her boss. She needed to think about anything else so that she could calm down and finally get some well deserved rest.
Only Elena’s traitorous mind brought up memories of how she had pretended she was with Massimo back when she was captured by Tyler. Her brain replied every compliment she had given, every “I love you” Elena had said, and every meal she had prepared for her husband, all while imagining that she was talking to Massimo and doing all that for him.
Elena recalled the fuzzy dreams she had of Massimo lovingly taking care of her in the hospital. She recalled the faint touches he let linger as he helped nurse her back to health. Elena knew she had imagined it all, but it felt so real–especially with Massimo sleeping a few feet away from her.
Elena wanted to scream. Why was it so hard to think about anything beyond Massimo?!
Out of patience and full of frustration, Elena decided she was making a big deal over everything. She was just sharing a bed with Massimo–it wasn’t like they were doing anything intimate or wrong! She had never crossed any boundaries she shouldn’t have–and sharing a bed with Massimo wouldn’t change that!
Elena closed her eyes tightly. It was only for one night, and nothing would happen.
Massimo woke up in the middle of the night to Elena clinging to his back. She was still asleep, of course. Massimo

knew that—even if Elena hadn’t been lightly snoring.
But Massimo also knew that Elena wouldn’t tolerate being so close if she was awake. She’d definitely be upset about this in the morning. So Massimo did his best to carefully pry her off.
All his efforts failed. He would remove her hand only for her sleeping form to tightly reach for him–this time with greater force. Even trying to move her slowly, finger by finger and inch by inch, produced the same results.
In the end, Massimo had to give up. He couldn’t remove Elena without waking her up.
