There was another knock at the door. This time it was louder.

At the same moment Elena dropped her arms, so did Massimo. In practically the same breath, they pulled apart. Wordlessly, they both put on one of the Grand Mermaid Hotel’s complementary robes and headed to the door.

Massimo opened the door to reveal Luna and Elio. They were both smiling–which was a good sign, hopefully.

“Sorry, we thought you’d be up by now,” Elio said. He casually put his hands in his pockets as he glanced at Luna before looking back at Massimo. “We’re treating everyone to breakfast today, so meet us in the lobby when you’re ready.”

“Think of it as a thank you gift for yesterday,” Luna added brightly.

Luna stared at Massimo and Elena longer than her husband had–Massimo didn’t like the way his cousin’s smile seemed to shift the longer she looked. “But if you prefer to sleep in,” Luna said slowly, “that’s also-”

“We’ll be downstairs in ten minutes,” Massimo said quickly. He closed the door on the couple, but not before Luna could flash him a wink.

Elena was grateful for Massimo’s tight deadline. It meant they didn’t have to talk about the position they had found themselves in this morning.

Though they didn’t talk, they both gave each other more space than usual as they hurriedly got ready. Elena was comforted by the fact Massimo seemed just as embarrassed by the whole situation as she was.

Luckily, with three couples trying to entertain them, it was easy for Elena to ignore the whole bed fiasco.

It seemed the Conti family followed the Ferraro’s policy of never doing something in half measures. They went overboard on everything.

First was breakfast at a small cafe that Elio and Luna had picked out. It looked humble from the outside, but their elaborate menu was anything but simple. Elena hadn’t even realized there were so many ways to cook an egg, let alone all the eighty different breakfast options.

Luckily, Elio and Luna ordered for the table. They got a handful of big dishes. Elio would put a sample of the meals on different plates, and Luna would then pass them around.

Elena couldn’t help thinking that they made a good team. It seemed like their fight from last night had truly been resolved. There was no tension in their shoulders or frowns in sight–Elio and Luna looked as happy as a married couple should.

Then Rocco and Riley insisted on taking everyone on a walk downtown.

“The best way to work off a meal is to shop at some tourist traps,” Riley had excitedly told Elena.

Elena let herself get dragged around by the enthusiastic woman. Although Riley had only just made it official with Rocco, she slotted into the family perfectly. Although Riley didn’t usually talk much, she was a great listener- throughout the walk, she would point out anything she thought her sisters–in–law and brothers–in–laws might like based on previous comments they had made.

And Rocco was there to make sure Riley didn’t forget to have fun herself. Elena was reminded of the time she went shopping with Massimo and how he had picked out dozens of gifts for Elena. Rocco was less hesitant and faster to push beautiful jewelry and trinkets on Riley, but he did it with the same type of heartfelt energy Massimo had.
