Chapter 137
Massimo was shocked. Why were the Conti members suddenly insisting they had to leave? It made no sense.
“What’s going on?” Massimo asked.
“I can’t say,” Nico said with a frown. “But personal matters have come up, so we must go home.”
“Surely you don’t all need to leave,” Massimo insisted. “Better yet, don’t you have any other members of your family back home who can take care of this issue?”
“It’s not that simple,” Nico replied.
“Then explain why it isn’t,” Massimo hissed.
Elena took a step closer to Don Nico Conti. She understood Massimo’s feelings, but pressing Don Conti was sure to lead to more problems than solutions.
“At least let us take you to the airport,” Elena said. It was the only offer that felt appropriate to both her boss and his guests.
Beatrice also stepped forward. Though she seemed upset, she forced a polite smile. “That would be divine, thank you.”
Massimo found a limousine. He insisted on driving. Elena let Don Nico take the front seat–instead, she sat in the back with the rest of the Conti family members.
The car was deathly quiet. No one was saying anything. Most of the Contis were looking out the windows or down at the floor.
The silence made Massimo’s sharp turns and abrupt stops all the more obvious. As Massimo made another turn and everyone in the back leaned from the car’s force, Elena came up with an idea.
“Massimo really is amazing at what he does,” Elena said, “but his driving is worse than any New Yorker I’ve ever met.”
Luna let out a nervous chuckle. Elena immediately turned to her.
“Seriously,” Elena continued. “My bus driver is more cautious than Massimo, and he’s been driving that bus since the eighties.”
Luna was laughing for real now. Rocco was grinning, too.
“It’s nice to know my little cousin has flaws,” Beatrice said neutrally. “Given what we had heard about him in the past decade or two, he seemed practically like a god.”
“I know, right?” Elena replied. “My first thought when I first saw him driving was, ‘Thank god, he’s human. He can suck at something like anybody else.“”
Massimo finally spoke up from the driver’s seat. “I passed my driving exam like anyone else.”
For some reason, that was the final straw that got the gloomy atmosphere to clear up. Everyone–even serious Beatrice and Elio–ended up laughing.
Even though something was clearly weighing on the Contis, the rest of the drive to the airport was much more familial and fun. Riley and Luna talked to Elena endlessly about how she needed to go to California sometime— they recommended about a dozen spots that Elena couldn’t keep track of. Even Rocco and Elio pitched in, saying that their hospitals could surely use Elena’s expertise–maybe then they could rival the Ferraro–owned hospital

in New York City.
Each family member said their goodbyes to both Massimo and Elena. Then, in practically the blink of an eye, they were through the airport gates and out of sight.
Massimo sighed.
“I’m sure things will be okay,” Elena said. “They wouldn’t have been so nice to us otherwise.”
Massimo’s frown didn’t move. “We’ll have to wait and see,” he said neutrally. “We might as well head back to New York–there’s no reason to stay here anymore.”
Massimo’s day was just getting worse and worse. The employee who was taking care of his private jet insisted that it wasn’t in shape to fly yet.
“We had been doing maintenance and found some parts that needed to be explained,” the jet engineer explained. It’ll be at least another two days before it’s ready to fly, and that’s only if everyone works day and night to make it happen.”
