Chapter 143
Fabio arrived at the Ferraro estate with his grandson’s divorce papers in hand. His expression was frazzled and tired as he entered the don’s office.
Massimo only felt a little bad for being the cause of his grandfather’s frustrations. He was, after all, dealing with a complicated revelation.
Massimo reached for the papers, but Fabio pulled his hand back. The don stared at the old man.
“The papers?” Massimo asked neutrally. After a moment’s hesitation, he guessed why his grandfather was suddenly being so stubborn and not following orders–something to do with manners and respect, probably.” Please,” Massimo tacked on.
Fabio only looked more frustrated. He began to pace across the office, his face slowly growing redder as he spoke.
“First you can’t even stand the idea of marriage and don’t want to get to know your wife at all. I finally stop pushing you to get to know this wonderful woman and give you my permission–no, my blessing!-to get divorced. Then the second your wife signs the blasted divorce papers, you’re suddenly asking me questions filled with nonsense and then having me rush back into your wife’s apartment to bring the damn things here!”
“Is there a point to your scolding?” Massimo asked.
Fabio threw up his hands and looked at his grandson. “The point is that I want an explanation. What is going on, Massimo?”
Massimo hesitated. He wasn’t sure how to explain that he had confused another for his wife and all the misunderstandings that occurred from there.
In a way, Massimo wasn’t even sure if he was making the right decision anymore. All he knew was that Elena being his wife complicated everything that Massimo thought was supposed to be simple.
“I refuse to make a mistake that can be avoided,” Massimo explained simply.
“And what mistake is that?” Fabio pressed.
“Isn’t it obvious? Divorcing Elena.”
Fabio sighed. “I know that a don always gets what he wants, but you need to make up your mind,” he said. “That girl is starting a new chapter of her life–she’s even getting a new apartment–so you really can’t be playing with her feelings like this.”
“She’s moving?” Massimo asked.
At Massimo’s words, Fabio looked ready to yell. He dropped the divorce papers on Massimo’s desk.
“I don’t know where I went wrong with you,” Fabio said, shaking his head. “Do what you want with those damned papers–sign them or don’t. I’m staying it out of it!”
In a huff, Fabio left the office, leaving Massimo alone.
Massimo stared at the divorce papers, trying to decide his next move. He hadn’t thought at all when Fabio said Elena already had them–Massimo had just insisted Fabio get them back and bring them to his estate.
Perhaps some part of Massimo had foolishly hoped that Elena wouldn’t have signed them already. But she had. She had agreed to divorce her mystery husband without any fuss.
But as Massimo looked at Elena’s messy signature, he realized something important: he hadn’t signed the papers

yet. And for the divorce to actually be official and legally binding, both spouses had to sign it.
Massimo nearly grinned. So long as he didn’t sign the papers, he and Elena were still married!
Of course, Massimo knew this was only a temporary solution. He still needed to talk to Elena–which would require extensive planning on the don’s part. Planning that Massimo had no idea where to start.
But Massimo wasn’t focused on such negative things. He was acting on impulse instead of careful, mafia–trained reasoning now.
And every fiber of Massimo’s being knew that he couldn’t get divorced. Not now that he knew his wife was Elena.
The next day, Elena arrived at work early. She didn’t want to think of how much of a disaster her love life had turned into–she just wanted to focus on using her medical expertise to help people.
But as the day went on, even work couldn’t hold Elena’s attention. Rather than focusing on restocking bandages and ordering extra antiseptic, Elena’s focus was solely on Massimo.
Elena couldn’t help but notice how oddly Massimo was behaving. He seemed constantly on edge and oddly jumpy. Whenever Elena asked her boss a question, he was always so startled and replied awkwardly.
Elena snuck next to Massimo’s second–in–command. “Lucas, how has the Don’s talks with the Conti family been going?”

“Well, I think,” Lucas replied, “but they do require a lot of Don Massimo’s attention. He’s been having more frequent phone calls with them.”
Elena nodded. That was likely the cause of Massimo’s odd behavior. Even the Don of All Dons would get nervous dealing with powerful new allies constantly.
Elena was preparing to leave work for the day when Massimo stopped her. He called her into his office.
“Did I forget to do an assignment?” Elena asked.
Massimo shook his head. “No, it’s not that. Is it true you’re moving?”
Elena was surprised by the blunt question. And more importantly, how had Massimo learned about this? She hadn’t recalled telling Massimo, but maybe Aria had said something?
“Yes,” Elena confirmed, “since Aria is moving out of state, I decided I should get a smaller apartment.”
“But you’re not moving out of state yourself?” Massimo pressed.
“Of course not,” Elena replied.
Massimo’s expression lightened. “That’s… good. It would be inconvenient otherwise.”
“I don’t intend to make my commute to work more miserable,” Elena joked, hoping to lighten the odd tension that she sensed from Massimo.
“I should hope not. You’re free to go, Elena.”
Massimo took out his phone–probably to email one of the Conti family members. Elena muttered a goodbye and headed for the office door.
Her phone suddenly buzzed. It was from her mystery husband.
