Chapter 144
Elena quickly left Massimo’s office without another word. She didn’t have any time to waste–she had an appointment to tour a few apartments!
When Elena had first started apartment hunting with Aria, she was concerned. Everything seemed so out of budget or on the wrong side of town. But after spending some more time searching, Elena finally was able to find apartments that were more what she wanted.
As Elena walked through different apartment complexes, her mind wandered. She couldn’t stop thinking about the text message from her husband.
He had said he made a mistake. In Elena’s mind, he had made several–the largest and most consistent mistakes being that he hadn’t replied to her messages for so long. Having his grandfather hand her divorce papers was just the icing on the cake.
“This apartment is well within your budget,” the realtor of the latest listed apartment told Elena. “The view isn’t great, but it’s very centrally located–you’ll never have a problem catching the bus or subway.”
Elena nodded along, trying to focus. Her phone suddenly vibrated.
It was her husband again.
“I would like to talk more when you’re free,” the message read.
Elena frowned. She knew she would have to talk to her husband sooner or later–she couldn’t avoid him forever. Elena didn’t have the stomach to give him a taste of his own behavior and ignore him for months.
“If you have time, there’s another style of apartment that’s on the market,” the realtor said. “I could let you see it today.”
Elena put her phone back in her pocket. She’d talk to her husband later. Right now, she had a mission to complete.
“Yes, that would be wonderful,” Elena replied.
Massimo waited in his bedroom. He normally preferred to stay in his office, but today had been too exhausting. Even Massimo could admit he needed a break.
He tried to start a new book, but his mind kept wandering elsewhere. To Elena, specifically.
Massimo had spent the entire day thinking of a solution to his latest problem–that he and Elena had unknowingly married each other and that he had then unknowingly ignored her and then tried to divorce her. But
no matter how hard the don examined the problem, he couldn’t come up with a solution.
It didn’t help that Elena’s face had flooded with a dozen different emotions once she got his text message. And then she hadn’t even bothered to respond to it!
It had been hours since he sent that message, and still there was no response. Massimo had kept his phone right next to him the entire time, waiting anxiously.
Massimo shook his head. He was better than this. He was the Mafia King!
Just then, his phone vibrated. There was a new text message from his wife.
“I really don’t understand you.”
Elena stared at her sent message. She hadn’t meant to send it—she was still in the process of drafting that message when she had accidentally hit send–but she wasn’t filled with regret. She meant those words.

“You talk to me daily, then suddenly ignore me,” Elena explained in a new text. “You want to meet in person and then demand a divorce.”
“Do you like me or hate me? Do you want to get to know me or not?” she asked. “It’s confusing.”
Massimo thought about what to say.
He could blame Aria, but Elena likely wouldn’t appreciate Massimo insulting her friend–plus the story made the mafia don look bad. In fact, if he got into the specifics, Elena would definitely figure out his identity, and Massimo wasn’t sure that was the best idea.
Would Elena blame Massimo for the whole situation? Would she insist they couldn’t work together or that they would need to get divorced? These thoughts made Massimo’s chest tighten.
“I was busy with work,” Massimo replied. “I didn’t notice my phone got hacked.”
Massimo waited breathlessly. He felt bad for lying to Elena, but he couldn’t risk ruining their relationship–not after they both worked so hard to land somewhere between comfortable and professional. Besides, it was close enough to the truth.
The thought of losing Elena was devastating. Massimo knew he needed Elena to remain at his side. Even if Massimo didn’t understand much about relationships of any kind, he was absolutely certain about that much.
Massimo watched three little dots appear and disappear and appear again. Finally, a new message came through.
“Hacked how?” Elena asked.
“I didn’t receive any of your messages after our canceled meeting,” Massimo responded. “Not until yesterday.”
Elena was surprised. That would explain his sudden switch to staying silent. But this explanation didn’t ease the sinking feeling in her stomach–Elena still felt uneasy.
Why hadn’t he reached out? Why didn’t he think it odd that Elena had suddenly stopped texting him after they used to text each other multiple times a day?
Elena took a deep breath.
“Whatever your reasons for your silence and demand for divorce were, it still makes it hard to talk to you now,” Elena admitted. “So I’m going to give this relationship one final chance. But to do this, I need to know who I’m dealing with.”
“That’s reasonable enough,” her husband replied.
Elena let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Maybe her husband really was the somewhat awkward but sweet man she had thought he was so long ago.
“How about we try meeting at that cafe you suggested again?” he suggested. “In two weeks, we can have dinner at Caffè Bella and talk face–to–face.”
“Only if you’re willing to have an honest conversation,” Elena texted back. “I want us to really get to know each other–it’s the only way we’ll be able to see if we can have a future together.”
“I’ll see you in two weeks at seven then.”
A knock at Elena’s bedroom door interrupted her texting. Her roommate Aria opened the door.
“Hey, El,” Aria said sweetly, smiling wide. “I just wanted to remind you that my move–out date is getting close, which also means your move–out date is getting close. Have you found a new place yet?”
