“Do you want any butter on your popcorn?” Aria asked as Elena entered the living room.

Elena nodded. Aria threw the brown bag of popcorn in the microwave and opened the fridge, searching for butter.

Elena moved to help but her phone unexpectedly vibrated.

“Oh, I got an email back about the apartment,” Elena told Aria.

As Elena looked at the reply email, her expression and tone shifted.

“Apparently it’s already been rented by someone else?” Elena reported hesitantly. “That’s weird, the realtor told me I could take my time thinking over my options when I saw her earlier today.”

“Maybe a wealthy guy came by later and instantly asked to sign the lease on the spot,” Aria said jokingly.

Elena rolled her eyes fondly. She emailed the realtor back to ask about one of the different apartments she had visited–it wasn’t like Elena had a strong favorite among them anyways.

To her surprise, Elena got an immediate reply.

“The whole apartment complex is rented out?!” Elena read aloud, completely taken aback. “How? These units were only listed like a day ago.”

“New York apartments can get competitive,” Aria said with a sympathetic smile. “If I were you, I’d ask all the realtors you talked to about a lease.”

Elena nodded her head. “Sounds like a plan. I mean, one of them has to have something left, right?”

Plans of movie night completely abandoned, Elena did as Aria suggested. But it didn’t matter whether Elena called, texted, or emailed–the response she received was the same.

No one had any available apartments left to rent.

Aria looked at her roommate’s downcast face. “No luck?”

Elena just shook her head. “Even the places I was originally avoiding because their prices were too high aren’t renting anymore,” Elena said.

Aria frowned. She tapped her chin, clearly thinking.

“What if I cover the apartment for another month?” Aria offered. “Just so you have a little more time to sort everything out.”

“No, you can’t do that,” Elena protested. “Aren’t you moving back home? You should save up your money.”

Elena could tell Aria wasn’t convinced, so she continued, “Besides, there are still places I haven’t tried yet.”

“If you’re sure,” Aria said haltingly. “Just let me know if you change your mind. I’m gonna head to bed.”

“Goodnight,” Elena said.

“Don’t stay up too late,” Aria warned.

All alone, Elena looked at website after website. She increased her search ranges–deciding to look at apartments that would be a little annoying to travel from and apartments that were closer to the rent of her current apartment or higher.

But no matter how long she looked, Elena couldn’t find anything. It was like the whole state of New York had decided to stop renting apartments! Finally, Elena had to give up and go to sleep.

Elena slept fitfully that night. By the time she headed to the Ferraro estate, she felt more tired and hopeless than she had before she went to bed.

“Are you alright?” Massimo asked as soon as Elena walked into his office.

“Yes,” Elena replied. “I just… had an eventful night.”

Massimo raised an eyebrow. “Eventful how?”
