Chapter 146
“Those were only because of circumstance,” Elena insisted, “like because I was sick. They were also temporary. I couldn’t live here long–term!”
“Why not?” Massimo asked. “You won’t find an apartment on the market with high quality plumbing, heating, and extra amenities like a pool and a movie theater.”
“That’s not the point,” Elena countered. “It would be extremely unprofessional.”
“It wouldn’t,” Massimo insisted. “You wouldn’t behave any differently and neither would I. Plus, it would be much easier to reach you in emergencies.”
Elena paused. Her boss did have a point. It would be much easier to help out at odd hours if she didn’t have to catch a taxi to meet Massimo.
After a long pause, Elena finally spoke up in a small, contemplating voice. “I couldn’t live here for free,” she said.
“I never said you would,” Massimo said. “I’d charge you a fair rate.”
Elena paused again, thinking the offer over. It would be nice to stay somewhere this nice. It would also be easier to find Massimo if she ever needed his approval for any new plans she wanted implemented.
“If I don’t find somewhere else to stay, I could rent out a spare room here,” Elena agreed.
The days passed faster than Elena expected. She had applied herself to apartment hunting, but she hadn’t found anything. All too soon, move–out day was here.
Elena helped Aria pack her boxes into her car. She was a little surprised Aria wasn’t catching a ride with one of her boyfriends, but Aria explained she was meeting up with her cousin immediately.
“I don’t need anyone meeting my cousin,” Aria groaned. “I barely tolerate him–I can’t expect a boytoy to do the same.”
As Elena moved boxes, she thought back to her deal with Massimo. She had only accepted his offer because it came from Massimo himself. He rarely made such kind offers, and Elena loved how his cold attitude was slowly thawing.
She wanted to encourage those tender sides of Massimo to grow. Elena knew it was just as important for Massimo the Mafia King to be ruthless as it was for Massimo the person to learn to be kind.
Besides, Elena liked working with him. She enjoyed hanging out with him–whether it was shopping or having dinner or visiting the aquarium. He would likely make for a good roommate since the two of them were slowly becoming good friends.
Still, Elena hadn’t expected she would actually have to move in with him! If Massimo reverted back to his old ways, Elena might have to be working twenty–four hours a day, seven days a week. The thought sent shivers down Elena’s spine.
“That’s the last box,” Elena announced as she set it inside the car’s trunk. Elena was honestly surprised the two of them had managed to squeeze all of Aria’s stuff into her car.
Aria closed the trunk door. She turned to Elena with a shaky, sad smile.
“I know I must have driven you crazy a million times over,” Aria admitted. “I mean, our personalities and lifestyles couldn’t be more total opposites, y’know? But still, I don’t think I’m ever gonna find a friend as awesome as you, El.”

Elena smiled. Aria truly was her best friend. What was she going to do without her?
“You have fun out there,” Elena said cheerfully, holding back tears.
“But not too much fun,” Aria finished.
They both laughed. Elena reached for a hug and Aria embraced her tightly.
