The car ride to Massimo’s estate passed in total silence. Elena was doing her best not to freak out.
Massimo left his car keys with a servant. “They’ll bring your things to your room in a minute. Shall I show you the way to where you’ll be staying?”
Elena smiled, not quite laughing at his joke. “I remember where the guest bedroom is,” she said.
Massimo frowned. “You’re not staying there.”
Before Elena could ask another question, he was walking away. Elena hurried after him.
Elena had grown somewhat familiar with the estate since she first started working here. She didn’t know where everything was the place was too huge for her to keep track of–but she knew all the high–traffic places like Massimo’s office, the dining room, some beautiful libraries, and the like.
That’s why Elena instantly noticed that the room Massimo was taking her to was directly next to his own master bedroom.
If that wasn’t enough to make Elena’s heart skip a beat, the fact the room was almost the same size as Massimo’s room certainly made her heart stall.
The walls were painted in an elegant pale pink and tall, custom–made windows in equally different but elegant shapes. The place was already filled with expensive furniture–a giant bed that must’ve been hand–carved, a dresser with some gorgeous stone surface that probably cost more than Elena had ever made in her life, and countless other expensive things that made Elena’s head spin.
“Let’s figure out where you want everything,” Massimo said suddenly.
His servants had already piled all her boxes outside her bedroom door. Elena was suddenly aware of how shabby her cardboard boxes looked next to everything in the estate.
Elena swallowed and tried to keep her cool.
Massimo smiled as he helped Elena set up her bedroom. He decided the best approach to this entire situation with Elena was to think of it as a business deal. Since he was a top businessman, this was the only way he could guarantee success.
Massimo knew what he wanted–Elena. So, like in any of his countless business deals, Massimo knew he had to be ruthless.
When business deals stalled, Massimo had many ways of restarting negotiations–or, better yet, making negotiations irrelevant. One of the most peaceful but effective ways of doing this was buying out competitors. If someone wasn’t selling what you wanted, you bought out the sellers–it was a simple mafia strategy.
So Massimo had bought out all the apartment complexes in New York and then found them occupants. He was especially sure to make sure all the apartments nearby to his estate had no rooms to rent. Which meant Elena would have to honor her deal and move into the Ferraro estate.
And it had worked! Massimo couldn’t be more pleased with himself.
Though a small part of him did wonder if he was only further complicating his relationship with Elena. In her texts to her husband, she had said she wanted an honest relationship.
Massimo shook his head. He hadn’t even done anything illegal in making sure Elena couldn’t rent an apartment. He was the Mafia King, the Don of All Dons, and he was going to rely on his strengths when dealing with a matter

And yet, he couldn’t fully shake that small feeling of doubt.
