Massimo thought he hadn’t said anything strange, but one look at Elena’s pale, shocked expression had him second–guessing that thought. Maybe he hadn’t phrased the statement correctly? He was out of practice talking to anyone about anything other than work, after all…

Or maybe this plan of slowly coming clean to Elena about everything was a very, very bad idea.

“I don’t care either way,” Massimo hurriedly stated, “but I wanted to let you know I knew. It’s a pointless, little lie -one that you shouldn’t feel obligated to keep talking about.”

This was going badly. Massimo held Elena’s gaze but he couldn’t figure out what emotions were rapidly flitting across her face. Was she sad or angry or relieved or frustrated–Massimo had no idea.

It was at that moment Massimo remembered that lying to a mafia don was a punishable offense. He had been so caught up in his own plans and desire to get closer to Elena that he had forgotten. Lying to a don who was the Don of All Dons surely would result in an even harsher punishment.

Knowing Elena’s bad relationship with her family, Elena was no doubt terrified that her boss was making this accusation and even more terrified because he was correct.

Massimo couldn’t back–track fast enough.

“It’s none of my business, after all,” Massimo said. “We both agreed to keep things professional, so anything not strictly work–related doesn’t need to be discussed if you’d rather not. I’d never punish you–or any of my employees–for what they do in their private life when it has absolutely no barrings on their work.”

As Massimo spoke, Elena managed to get her heart out of her throat. She took a deep breath and willed the rush of adrenaline to disappear.

“It’s fine,” she finally said. “I’m alright talking about these types of things–I just hadn’t expected you to say that.

Some part of Elena always knew the lie about Joshua Miller being her husband was a ticking time–bomb. It was honestly surprising Massimo hadn’t found out sooner. And this was one of the more amicable ways for the secret to be revealed.

Elena took another steadying breath.

“I am married–just not to Joshua Miller,” she explained. “Joshua is an old friend from middle school. And I used his name in place of my husband’s because…well, our relationship is complicated right now.”

“Complicated how?” Massimo pressed.

“We’ve only ever talked digitally,” Elena said. “I haven’t met him in person yet.”

Elena held up her hands. “I never meant for this lie to spiral out of control–I just knew that when we first started working together, the truth would sound really suspicious. And since we had barely just met each other, I figured you wouldn’t believe me anyways.”

Massimo stayed silent for a long moment. When he spoke, his words took Elena by surprise.

“Do you still believe that’s true?” he asked. “That I wouldn’t believe you?”

Elena didn’t need to think about her answer. “No,” Elena replied, “I feel I can be more honest with you. Besides, our relationship is far more stable than it was in the beginning.”
