Chapter 150
There were several dishes already on display at the table–several of which she recognized as delicious dishes she had during her previous stay at the estate. She fondly recalled taking pictures of salads and seafood and small finger sandwiches and then texting them to her husband. He seemed surprised that Elena could gush about such food for so long, but Elena knew that whoever the Ferraro chefs were, they deserved every medal and trophy imaginable for their cooking.
But the fact all her favorite dishes were being served was a small surprise compared to the fact Massimo was already sat across from her.
“I hope you weren’t waiting for me,” Elena said.
“It wasn’t a long wait,” Massimo replied. “Besides, today is your move–in day, so we should have a meal together.

Elena smiled. She knew Massimo was normally busy with work, and therefore he had a bad habit of eating at odd hours, if he even left his office at all. She was touched that he had made such a big effort to welcome her.
Dinner itself was quiet. The only sound was the moving of plates and silverware as the two ate in silence.
Elena didn’t think this was odd. Massimo might have looked lost in thought, but he was probably just thinking about work. In general, Massimo wasn’t ever a talkative person.
If she wanted to have dinner conversation, it was therefore better to stick to topics Massimo was actually
interested in.
“How is work going?” Elena asked. “The Conti family has kept up their correspondence from what I’ve seen. Are things going well with them?”
“Well enough,” Massimo replied. “Luna and Elio are doing most of the day–to–day talking since Nico and Beatrice are traveling for their anniversary.”
Massimo frowned, and Elena instantly knew Luna’s teasing streak hadn’t gone away. That woman loved to torment her cousin with old stories.
“That must be fun,” Elena said.
Massimo didn’t say anything. In fact, it looked like he was thinking–quite serious, in fact–about whether such things were fun. In the end, he shrugged his shoulders.
“It’s not horrible,” Massimo replied. “Anyways, with the Contis firmly on our side, it’s time to start strengthening our ties to mafia families closer to New York…”
Massimo explained his strategy to Elena. He had gotten used to having her replace his second–in–command Luca in this way–her advice could be very keen and helpful. Massimo wanted to know Elena’s opinions before he made any decisive moves.
And yet, he couldn’t focus. Massimo found himself looking at Elena, soaking in every twinkle in her eyes, every smile that lit up her face, and every inhale and exhale that made her neck tremble ever so slightly.
Massimo had always found Elena beautiful. But only recently had he begun to realize how magnetic she could be. Something about knowing that Elena would always be within arm’s reach made it impossible for Massimo’s attention to be on anything that wasn’t Elena.
Slowly, Massimo let the talk of work fade out. It was impossible to keep talking about mafia dealings. His head was filled to the brim with thoughts of Elena.
