Chapter 151
Elena laughed. She hadn’t realized how well Massimo had gotten at telling Jokes, but he had seriously improved his delivery.
“What would you do?” Massimo insisted.
It was only once Elena noticed Massimo’s intense stare that he realized the question was serious.
“I would divorce him,” Elena said simply. “He’s offered divorce before, so I could definitely press the issue and get our marriage dissolved.”
She took another sip of her coffee. When she looked up, Massimo’s face was frozen in shock.
“What?” he finally asked.
“It was over a misunderstanding, but he has asked for a divorce before,” Elena said, leaving out just how many times her mystery husband had suggested divorce. “He changed his mind, obviously, but I think it would be fair for me to demand a divorce in that case. He would’ve been keeping a huge secret.”
“What if he hadn’t meant to keep such a secret?” Massimo asked. “Or he was only doing it to protect you, and now was the first time he could be fully honest with you? There’s plenty of good reasons to lie, aren’t there?”
Elena put down her cup, thinking. “I guess,” she agreed, “but I just don’t need to be further caught up in the mafia underworld. Not that I don’t enjoy working for you, Massimo—I really do enjoy it—but marrying a mafia man? Even if his family was allied with yours and there was no conflict of interest in keeping my job, I wouldn’t want to be married to him.”
Massimo didn’t say anything. He just let out a soft, “Hm.”
“But none of this matters,” Elena stated. “While I never learned my husband’s name, I do know his profession. He’s just a simple mechanic, so you don’t have to worry about him being an enemy to the Ferraro family.”
Massimo was still thinking over Elena’s words after they had gone their separate ways and turned in for the night.
Of course she would expect Massimo to be paranoid about her mystery husband–especially when her decoy pretend husband was a district attorney who was hellbent on getting him behind bars. That was the most reasonable conclusion to come to.
Elena hadn’t hesitated to say she would leave a mafia man. And that was just some hypothetical low–ranking mafia man, not a don! Not the Don of All Dons!
Elena would never accept her marriage if she knew who it was she was really married to.
Massimo rolled over in his bed and pressed his face into his pillow. How had things gotten so complicated?
It wasn’t fair. Massimo knew he shared a deep, special relationship with Elena. Several times they had gotten so close to getting together.
When she treated his wounds in the middle of the night. When they were alone on that cruise ship. All that time he spent with her while he waited for her to recover in the hospital.

It was truly more impressive that they hadn’t crossed any lines yet.
Unlike the stranger on the phone Elena barely knew, she saw him daily. They even shared secrets. If Elena wasn’t married, Massimo knew they probably would’ve already gotten together.
And yet, because he made the mistake of listening to his grandfather–along with a whole bunch of misunderstandings and acts of sabotage–Elena would never accept Massimo as her husband.
Massimo desperately tried to clear his thoughts and fall asleep, but the old teachings of his grandfather echoed in his head on repeat.
“The life of the Mafia King is a lonely one,” Fabio had told him. “Few people can endure it.”
Why would anyone want to share in that loneliness–especially someone as brilliant and bold and wonderful as Elena?
The next morning, Elena woke up early. Though it was strange to be living at the Ferraro estate, Elena had actually slept fine. She had originally been nervous about sleeping next door to Massimo, but the walls were so thick and there was so much space between her bed and the adjoining wall–Elena had actually had one of her better nights of sleep!
As Elena went through the day, she tried to get used to the estate. Though she was used to working here, she soon realized living here was a completely different experience.
First of all, there were already plenty of things here–clothes, makeup, jewelry, trinkets, and such left in her bedroom that she was just expected to use at her own discretion. Furthermore, the servants were no longer treating her like another employee or an unfortunate guest. They were treating her almost as nicely as they treated Massimo.
Elena wondered if Massimo had made special arrangements for her. The clothing was all in her size–and while Elena shared a similar dress size with Aria, their shoe sizes were very different. This couldn’t all just be leftovers from his ex–wife.
But why would Massimo go to such extreme lengths? Did he tell the servants to keep a close eye on her as well? Elena thought about it all and decided Massimo might still be worried about her pushing herself to hard. She had gotten shot recently. The hospital had even warned her on being careful, and Elena had tried to be.
Since Elena had been staying at Massimo’s hospital, it would have been easy for him to get her medical records. He was probably trying to make sure she actually took things easy and didn’t get hurt again. Maybe this was even his way of apologizing for not stopping her abduction from happening in the first place.
Elena slowly got more adjusted to the Ferraro estate as the week went by. Her partial mental map of the estate grew as she discovered all the places that she needed to know about.
At the same time, she was sure to keep in contact with her husband. His texts were more frequent and regular now. While he was still a bit awkward and sarcastic, Elena enjoyed the little bit of familiarity she had through him as she adapted to such a different way of living.
Elena began to hesitantly hope that things might work out between her and her husband. She hadn’t forgotten how he had ghosted her, but she wanted to stay optimistic.
And, of course, there was always work to keep her busy.
