Elena stood up straighter. “What do you need help with?” Elena asked seriously.

Massimo’s expression turned grim. “It’s Luna.”

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “How was she injured? Do we need to visit their estate now?”

Massimo looked confused. “No, she’s not injured. Her birthday is coming up and she’s becoming far too annoying–I can’t get away with sending her any of the usual things.”

“Oh,” Elena said. She wanted to yell at the don for being so dramatic, but she was too relieved that Luna was unharmed.

Elena shook her head. “Lead with that next time, please. So what is it exactly you need my expertise for?”

“Picking out a birthday present. It’s of the utmost importance.”

Elena thought back to the presents he tried to get his ex–wife. He really did need all the help he could get.

“Sir,” Elena said, matching Massimo’s grave and serious tone, “we should leave immediately. We’re going to need as much time as we can get.”

Massimo nodded. “I’ll have the servants bring the car around.”

Massimo, it seemed, was a creature of habit. He had taken Elena to the same luxury stores they had been to last time they went shopping. Unfortunately, Massimo was just as helpless shopping for women as he was back then, too.

Massimo stared at a clothing rack like it had personally offended him. He hesitantly grabbed a cheetah print jacket. He looked at Elena for approval.

“That does match some of the clothes she wore on vacation,” Elena said slowly, “but it’s a little too similar. You don’t want to get her a second of something she already owns.”

Massimo set the jacket back on the rack with a huff. “This is impossible!” he exclaimed. “Working backwards from what she likes is getting us nowhere.”

Elena thought for a moment. “Do you remember any times when the two of you were younger?” she asked.

Massimo looked at her hesitantly. “Nothing particularly interesting,” he huffed, still clearly mad.

“Just try,” Elena said. “Please? Even if it’s nothing interesting, we’ll have tried something new.”

Massimo sighed. Then he took a deep breath. Finally, he furrowed his brow in thought.

“Besides the time she helped the boys with ties at big family gatherings,” Massimo said slowly, “I think there was a year she got in trouble for drawing on the walls with Beatrice.”

“What did they draw?” Elena asked.

“Rabbits, I think,” Massimo replied. “They were bright pink. The crayons and markers stained their father’s house for years to come.”

Elena nodded. “Do you know of any jewelry stores that take commissions?”

At the jewelry store, Elena talked Massimo into getting a custom necklace charm of a pinkerayon

“Isn’t this a little cheap?” Massimo said as they filled out the form and were given a price. “Family deserves more expensive gifts.”

Elena stared at Massimo. The crayon was going to be made out of a cylinder of pure gold with two pink diamonds attached at either end. Engraved on the crayon in even tinier diamonds would be a simple picture of a rabbit’s head.

The price of the custom charm was crazy–but Elena had forgotten she was dealing with Massimo Ferraro, the Don of All Dons. Of course this price must’ve been nothing more than pocket change to him.

“It’s better to go with something less expensive and meaningful than more expensive and meaningless,” Elena advised him. “Besides, Luna probably already has the latest fashionable clothes and shoes–she’s a trendy woman. Trust me, this will mean more to her.”

Massimo hesitated for a moment. But then he turned to the store clerk and handed him the form. “I’ll want this rush ordered for two weeks from now.”

“Yes, of course, sir!” the clerk responded.

Elena figured Massimo would want to immediately leave the shopping district, but he instead walked further down the street and into a men’s department store.

“Don’t tell me you’re planning on getting another gift for Luna?” Elena asked as she hurried to keep up with the don and avert disaster. “The charm should be more than enough! And, I have to remind you, women rarely ever want stuff like men’s shoes or watches!”

“Even if they’re married?” Massimo asked. He didn’t slow down but headed straight for the men’s ties.

“Then you’re essentially getting a gift for their husband,” Elena stated.

“Good,” Massimo said, searching through the ties. “Elio’s birthday isn’t long after Luna’s–I’ll just send them their gifts now.”
