Chapter 157
Elena sighed. She was relieved she didn’t have to drag a mafia don out of a department store. It’s not like she would win that battle, but Elena owed it to someone as nice as Luma to make sure the woman didn’t get a terrible birthday gift.
Massimo selected a tie of silk with a black and white checkered pattern. He showed it off to Elena with a grin How about this one,” he said with a grin.
The tie was incredibly fashionable, if a bit bold. It was definitely a modern statement piece. Elena could envision Elio wearing it.
“Do you think she still has a ban against checkered ties?” Elena asked.
“No idea,” Massimo confessed. His grin grew wider. “But there’s one way to find out.”
They bought the tie, laughing all the while.
“Luna and Elio make a pretty decent match,” Elena remarked as they left the store.
“Did you forget their fight at the restaurant?” Massimo asked.
“Did you forget how they made up?” Elena countered. “All couples have fights.”
Massimo shifted his single shopping bag awkwardly to his other hand. “Do they?”
“Yes,” Elena replied. “No one is perfect, and mistakes happen. The important thing is coming back from all that.
“Are there things partners can’t come back from?” Massimo asked. “There must be, right? Like a lie that would break the whole relationship?”
Elena thought for a moment. “Yes, but I really can’t think of anything that serious that can’t be fixed by an apology–beyond the obvious stuff like cheating on your partner.”
Massimo looked at Elena oddly. But he didn’t speak up, so Elena decided not to comment on it.
She looked around the shopping district. “Oh, the bakery has opened up! Why don’t we get something to eat and enjoy it outside before we go home?”
The silence that fell as they sat down on a bench to sample some pastries was becoming unbearable. Elena deeply regretted even suggesting getting a snack. It would’ve been better to just go straight to the estate!
She wasn’t looking forward to the silent drive back either. Elena thought deeply of some innocent topic she could bring up to restart the conversation. But the atmosphere of their trip had suddenly gotten very tense somehow–and that made it impossible for Elena to focus.
“How is your relationship with your husband these days?” Massimo asked suddenly.
Elena grabbed the offered topic like a lifeline. “It’s great!” she said quickly. “We’re talking a lot more these days, so it’s more like how things were in the beginning.”
“And that’s good?” Massimo pressed.

Elena nodded. “It makes me feel better about agreeing to meet him,” she confessed, “I still have tomorrow night off, right?”
“The whole night,” Massimo confirmed. “I won’t call you for anything.”
“Anything short of a big, major emergency,” Elena countered. “I’ll be mad if you don’t tell your personal doctor if you’re experiencing a medical emergency.”
“I’ll go to my family’s hospital if I need to,” Massimo insisted. “I’ll send you a text if it’s life or death though.”
Elena snorted. “How thoughtful.”
Massimo shrugged good naturally. “I can be very thoughtful,” he joked back. His deadpan delivery did make him a stealth comedian at times.
“Thank you for your thoughtfulness,” Elena said, half joking and half serious.
Again, Massimo shrugged–but this time, the action was truly hesitant.
