Elena knew she should back away, but she didn’t. If she stayed frozen, she wouldn’t have to admit she had practically jumped into Massimo’s lap. She could just enjoy this moment in the dark.
So she stayed perfectly still.
Massimo’s breathing slowed. She could feel his body heat from his legs where they touched hers. They were small points of contact, but they were impossible to ignore.
Elena slowed her breathing to match Massimo’s. If she turned around, what expression would be on his face? What would he say to her?
But Elena chided herself. She shouldn’t be thinking about any of this. Massimo was her boss, not her husband!
And Elena had been making an effort to reignite her relationship with her mystery husband. It’d be wrong of her to linger in Massimo’s personal space. She wouldn’t be able to face her husband if she didn’t.
Elena stood up quickly with a sheepish expression. “Sorry about that,” she said as she took a step back. “I didn’t realize the storm outside had gotten so brutal.”
“It’s alright,” Massimo replied. He also stood up, though he kept Elena at arm’s length. “The storm picked up without much warning.”
Elena nodded. “I can’t believe it knocked out the power, too. How long do you think it will be before it comes back on?”
“Probably a few hours,” Massimo said. “But there’s a back–up generator in the basement. It should just take a minute to get that working.”
Massimo offered Elena his hand. “Shall we?”
Elena only hesitated a moment before grabbing Massimo’s hand. It was only practical–she didn’t want to get lost in the dark.
Massimo expertly led Elena down into the basement. As her eyes adjusted to the lack of light, she was surprised by what she saw.
Compared to the rest of the estate, the basement was practical and simple. The floor was just hard, thick concrete. The space itself was taken up by large tool chests, a few tables, and then all the machines that kept the rest of the house running.
“This space is very different,” Elena commented.
Massimo paused in his steps and glanced around, as if taking in the basement anew. “I think it was one of the earlier projects that never got remodeled with the rest of the house. It never needed to–not many people come down here.”
Massimo began walking again, guiding Elena to the back of the basement with ease. She could make out a large metal box–that was probably the generator.
“My father was the only one in recent generations who used the area,” Massimo continued. “According to my grandfather, he practically used the basement as a second office with how long he would spend down here,

working on projects.”
“You’re very familiar with the space,” Elena remarked neutrally. “Do you come down here often?”
“Only when work requires an engineering project,” Massimo replied. “It’s not my preferred pastime, but sometimes it’s necessary to tinker with things yourselves–if you want anything done correctly.”
Massimo flipped a switch on the generator and then pulled a lever. The lights in the basement–and presumably, the rest of the estate–slowly came back on.
“So you’re not a regular Fixer Felix then?” Elena asked with a grin. “But you seem so handy!”
Massimo just looked at her with a blank expression. Elena gasped.
“No, come on, don’t tell me you never watched Wreck–It Ralf? That was the summer movie growing up,” Elena complained.
“Ah yes, because movies are essential mafia training,” Massimo said with an eye roll.
“They are now,” Elena said. “Are you up for a movie tonight?”
Massimo blinked rapidly. “Yes! I mean, provided that it’s not a children’s movie.”
“You drive a hard bargain, but I’ll take it,” Elena replied with a smile.
In the Ferraro estate’s home movie theater, Elena searched through what movies were already available. While there was a wider selection than she expected, she was at a loss on what movie Massimo would enjoy. She eventually settled on an action thriller that seemed based around cars–that felt like a safe choice.
Elena popped in the movie and took her seat next to Massimo. He had already grabbed some popcorn and sodas, so the two were ready to begin.
The movie, as Massimo was quickly discovering, was boring. People kept competing in illegal car races and complaining that their cars didn’t go fast enough. And if that setup wasn’t bad enough, the acting of the whole cast was completely disappointing.
But Massimo recalled his dating plan. Movie dates, as he had discovered, were extremely popular–but not because people actually enjoyed whatever film they were watching. No, movies were an excuse to get physically closer to your date.
So Massimo initiated the second step of his plan–get as physically close to your crush for as long and as often as possible. Prolonged skin contact, apparently, would release chemicals in a person’s brain that made them like you more over time. Massimo wasn’t taking any chances–he needed every bit of seductive advantage he could get.
Full of resolve and determination, Massimo leaned over to Elena and went to rest his arm on her shoulder.
At the same time, someone on screen yelled, causing Elena to startle. She moved her arms rapidly, accidently elbowing Massimo in the stomach. He let out a groan.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. Are you okay? Here, let me-”
Elena, in her hurry to see what was wrong, ended up knocking over their popcorn and drinks. Most of it got on

the floor, but some did spill onto Massimo’s pants.
Elena’s eyes only widened. She couldn’t believe she got startled by such a cheap scare trick–and that her reaction had all somehow led to this. How had she managed to be so clumsy?
“I’m so sorry,” Elena repeated, slower this time. “Let me go grab some cleaning supplies.”
Elena got up and took a step to the door, but Massimo’s hand stopped her.
“It’s fine,” he said, equally slowly. “I’ll get one of the servants to take care of this–it’s what I pay them for, after all.”
