Massimo’s mind began to race. Why had Elena pulled away from him? Had he done something wrong?
At the last public event, Elena had kissed him on the lips. Even in a small gathering of Massimo’s subordinates, she had taken the initiative and sat in his lap–she had even gotten comfortable enough to fall asleep there!
And during it all, Massimo had been doing his best to be charming and seductive. Massimo was certain Elena had fallen for him, so why was she pulling away now? Why was she refusing to kiss him?
The crowd didn’t notice Elena’s sudden coldness, but Massimo certainly did. As the bride and groom left the party and guests began to have their own fun, Massimo noticed how tense and distant Elena was. She even stood farther away from him, no longer keeping to his side.
Massimo wanted to ask Elena what was going on, so he waited for an opportunity.
He had to wait another hour until he saw an open balcony. Elena had luckily been hovering nearby–not far enough from Massimo to raise outside suspicion, but far enough for Massimo to easily notice.
“Elena, a word,” Massimo said softly, gesturing to the balcony.
“Can’t it wait?” Elena asked.
“It can’t,” Massimo insisted. “So let’s talk away from prying eyes-”
Elena suddenly turned her head away from Massimo. “Mr. and Mrs. Grasso,” Elena called warmly, “what a delight!”
Tim and Jill Grasso were indeed heading their way–and they had brought along a few other mafia men. Massimo frowned, annoyed at the sudden interruption.
Everyone started sharing their names and titles, but Massimo couldn’t care less. For once, he could only grunt along as Tim discussed potential business deals with the other men present.
Massimo reached for Elena, wanting to slip away. But before his hand could land on her arm, Elena once again. slyly slipped out of reach.
“Mrs. Grasso,” Elena called suddenly, “it seems Ms. Abano and her friend are alone. Didn’t you want to talk fashion with them? We should hurry over.”
To Massimo’s horror, the old woman simply nodded. “Lead the way, dear,” Jill replied.
Before Massimo could protest, the women were off and into the crowd, leaving the men to talk about business
alone.
Massimo held back a sigh.
Talking with Mrs. Grasso and the other women only lasted a few minutes, but it was enough for Elena to escape. Her list of people to avoid for the night had only grown. First it was her parents and Tyler Morello, but now Massimo was included, too.
Could Elena’s night be any more of a disaster?
Elena didn’t know when her life had gotten so complicated. All she knew was how to disappear and sink into the

background during every mafia gathering–and she was making great use of those skills now.
She couldn’t see Massimo–not here, at least. Elena didn’t know if she could handle kissing him again. What if her feelings got even more mixed up?
As Elena wove in and out of the crowd, she knew she couldn’t continue pretending to be Massimo’s wife until she had a real, serious talk with her real husband. Elena couldn’t handle keeping the details from her husband any longer. Everything had only gotten worse when Elena had tried to ignore it all, so it was time for her to try something different.
Maybe then Elena would be able to see what the right thing to do was.
Elena spotted a couple leaving a nearby balcony. Before the door fully closed, she snuck through.
The music from inside was considerably muffled out on the balcony, barely able to be heard. The view of the woods was also quite breath–taking. But most importantly, Elena was finally alone.
With a sigh of relief, Elena took out her phone. She attempted to text her mystery husband, but a large flashing notification stopped her.
“No signal,” Elena read. “Are you serious?”
Elena sighed again. Maybe she could try a different spot, like the women’s bathroom? Surely there had to be some place with a better, usable cell signal.
As Elena was about to leave, the balcony door opened. Elena came face to face with one of the very people she had been trying to avoid, and he was now blocking her only means of escape.
“Elena,” Massimo said slowly, “we need to talk. What’s going on with you tonight?”
“Are you sure it’s a good idea to have this conversation here?” Elena asked.
“Yes,” Massimo replied sternly. “This is as private as we can get here, and I refuse to have you keep avoiding me for the rest of the night. So tell me what’s going on.”
Elena was tempted to say, “Nothing” and try to push past her boss, but she knew that wouldn’t solve anything. So she thought for a moment and chose her words carefully.
“Massimo,” Elena said quietly, “you know I’m married.”
Elena emphasized the last word and gestured with her hand–though Massimo insisted these balconies were secluded and private enough for their purposes, she didn’t want to risk slipping information about their ruse to any eavesdroppers.
Luckily, Massimo instantly understood that she meant “married to another man.” But he only frowned at her.
“Yes, and?” Massimo pressed. Clearly he wasn’t going to understand Elena’s plight unless she explained herself more clearly.
“And a married woman shouldn’t be doing what I’m doing,” Elena hissed.
“I thought everyone was fine with it,” Massimo replied, crossing his arms stubbornly. “So what’s the problem?”
“I feel guilty,” Elena confessed.

“Guilty?” Massimo repeated, confused.
Suddenly, the floodgates were open and Elena was doing the best she could not to leak out all their secrets along with her feelings.
