Before Elena could say a word, Massimo was pushing her behind him and taking a large step towards Tyler.

“You’d think a don would have to be smart to keep hold of his position, but you continue to be a threat to common logic and decency, Tyler,” Massimo said coldly.

“Your rudeness is as legendary as your power, Don of All Dons,” Tyler replied. His cane echoed on the balcony floor as he took a step forward. “I wonder which will change first–your manners or your influence?”

“While you’re thinking, you might as well remember how every fight you’ve picked me has gone, Tyler,” Massimo retorted, his eyes brimming with cold rage. “You’re already a disgrace to the other dons. You don’t have much further to fall.”

Tyler laughed cruelly and grinned before holding up his free hand in peace. Neither Elena nor Massimo believed his act for a second.

“You have such a temper, Don of All Dons,” Tyler said sweetly, “but there’s no need to make threats. I’m just making conversation! And you wouldn’t want to lose such a wonderful woman like Elena with such unpleasant talk.”

Elena did not miss the way Tyler’s eyes suddenly locked onto her. It was like he was trying to burn every inch of her into his memory. She did her best not to shiver under his sight.

Tyler’s hungry serpent gaze always made her feel small and exposed. It reminded her of memories she’d rather forget from the days he had her imprisoned.

Massimo’s icy voice pulled Elena back to reality.

“I never gave permission to speak her name, let alone gaze upon her,” Massimo said suddenly. His voice was fearsome, spoken like some blood–soaked warrior of old. It should’ve struck fear into the hearts of whoever listened, yet Elena felt comforted–Massimo wouldn’t let anything happen to her.

Tyler’s gaze returned back to Massimo. “Weren’t you the one insisting women weren’t property back on that little cruise? You certainly seem to have changed your opinion on that now that benefits you.”

As Tyler and Massimo continued to size each other up, Elena noticed that the door to the balcony hadn’t quite closed. In fact, someone had shoved a tie to keep it open.

The two dons had changed their position enough for Elena to sneak, unnoticed, back to the door. As she gave the door the slightest push, a hand quickly grabbed hold of her and pulled her back into the party.

Elena nearly cried out herself in shock, but she caught a glimpse of her assailant. So instead, Elena waited until the assailant closed the door with his free hand before addressing him.

“Relax, the only time I was spotted by anyone was when I grabbed you just now,” Matteo said, waving a glass flute airily. “And your boss is the Don of All Dons–the only guy who directly outranks Don Morello. This was the only chance to get you out of seeing that man.”
