Chapter 204
Her brother, as Elena was quickly figuring out, was more resourceful than she ever gave him credit for.
“Drink?” Matteo asked, holding out a champagne flute to her.
Meanwhile, on the balcony, the two dons were still having a dangerous conversation. They hadn’t started fighting physically–not yet at least.
Part of Massimo knew he needed to keep a level head. If he started a fight with Tyler here, Tyler’s men would get involved, which meant Massimo’s subordinates would get involved. It would only take a small spark of violence to make this whole building go up in flames and leave a bloody massacre in its place.
But another small part of Massimo burned with rage at the thought of Tyler threatening Elena.
“I’m going to give you one last reminder, Tyler,” Massimo all but spat out. “Watch yourself and stay out of my damn way.”
Massimo moved to go past Tyler. He wanted to be the bigger person, the type of mafia don who wouldn’t senselessly pick a fight at a wedding.
But then that smug bastard spoke and Massimo stopped moving.
“If you’re not going to talk with me anymore tonight,” Tyler taunted, “I do have one question about the lovely couple. Then I’ll leave you alone, as you wish.”
Massimo huffed. “Go ahead and ask it–I’m sure you’d speak out of turn no matter what I say,” Massimo replied.
“It’s odd that everyone’s calling Elena your wife instead of your second wife,” Tyler drawled as he leaned on his cane. “In fact, everyone seems to think you’ve never been married before—even though we both know a different woman was your wife just a few short months ago. I wonder how people would react if they knew what we both know.”
Massimo refused to rise to Tyler’s obvious bait and get annoyed. He refused to give Tyler the satisfaction. After all, Massimo knew something Tyler didn’t–though someone else had tricked Massimo, the Mafia King had only ever legally been married to one woman.
“You better have proof if you’re going to make any claim,” Massimo replied coolly. “And if such a rumor arose, anyone could check my marriage information–it’s a public record, after all. And that record will state I’ve only ever been married to one woman: Elena Vitale.”
Massimo placed his hand on the balcony door. He was not surprised Tyler still wouldn’t let him have the last
word.
“It’s strange to see you in love, Don Massimo,” Tyler called after him. “But I wish all the best, and I hope the two of you don’t get into too many fights. Nothing spoils a relationship so fast.”
Elena did not accept Matteo’s drink. She still had serious matters to discuss.
“There’s a chance Tyler is no longer obsessed with me,” Elena said. “He was spotted with a new girl, so Tyler might not even care about me anymore. I was probably safe on the balcony with Massimo.”

“What are you talking about?” Matteo replied. “Don Morello hasn’t taken up any new lovers. Trust me, he always brags about his conquests during meetings–I would’ve heard if he had.”
Matteo shoved the spare champagne flute into Elena’s hand and clinked his glass against hers. He took a long sip from his drink.
“And trust me, he only wants to talk about you with Dad,” Matteo continued. “If anything, he’s more obsessed about ‘claiming‘ you than ever. You should’ve seen him after the news came out that you were married to the Mafia King–he was practically crazy!”
“That’s… bad,” Elena said simply. She didn’t like how easily she could picture Tyler acting out over her. “I don’t know if I should stay here in the open if that’s all true.”
“Let me walk you to your hotel then,” Matteo offered.
For once, Elena immediately agreed.
The walk back was thankfully uneventful. Elena made Matteo swear he’d call her if he heard anything new- either about her parents‘ schemes or Tyler’s behavior–while he’s staying at home with their parents.
