Massimo thought the party had gone well, all things considered. Tyler didn’t make any fuss and neither did Elena’s parents. Everyone simply enjoyed the wedding celebration–and the bride and groom left with smiles on their faces.
But the next morning, Massimo woke to find that Elena was still sleeping. She had returned to the hotel much earlier than Massimo had, and Elena was normally a very early riser.
Massimo took the opportunity to get a nice breakfast for the two of them and bring it back to the hotel. And though Elena smiled at that gesture, Massimo could easily tell she wasn’t doing great. The smile felt forced and didn’t reach her eyes.
Massimo kept his mouth shut as they packed up, hoping that Elena’s good mood would return any minute. But it didn’t.
He tried to think of moments when Elena had seemed happiest–maybe Massimo could recreate something and cheer her up? Suddenly, Massimo recalled all their shared, private driving memories. Elena had a lot of fun during one of their last roadtrips, didn’t she?
“Let’s drive back together,” Massimo suggested. “The limo will be cramped anyway with all the stuff Luca needs to return, and then I won’t have to have a subordinate return my car back to the estate. Besides, it will be more quiet with just the two of us.”
Elena only nodded along, clearly lost in her own thoughts.
Elena stayed quiet as Massimo drove down the beautiful Maine side roads, full of thick woods and gorgeous plants. They could’ve been back in terrible New York City traffic for all Elena was paying attention to it. She had too much to think about to pay attention to the scenery.
Elena hadn’t managed to talk to her mystery husband about her work as a fake wife. She knew she needed to bring it up, but she had been too shaken up from her half–brother’s unexpected news about Tyler.
Tyler’s obsession with Elena had already been bad before. He treated her like a prize to be won at a casino table. He had kidnapped her, drugged her, threatened her, harmed her, and tried to brainwash her into being his perfect little wife.
And now, Matteo was saying Tyler had grown even more obsessed—what more could Tyler try to do to Elena? She didn’t know, but the thought had her on edge. If all this was just a preamble to Tyler’s true obsession, Elena was terrified of what was coming next.
Elena had barely survived all of Tyler’s previous tricks. Could she survive whatever plans he had secretly made? It was clear Tyler was getting restless…
“How about we stop at a diner?” Massimo suddenly offered.
“I’m not hungry,” Elena replied.
Massimo kept his eyes on the road–and on any billboards and shops that were nearby.
“That looks like an interesting thrift store,” Massimo pointed out. “I wonder what’s inside?”
“Don’t know, but we should keep going,” Elena said. “We really shouldn’t stop for frivolous things. We’ll never
return to the estate at a reasonable hour if we do.”

Massimo frowned. Elena really wasn’t having a good day if she didn’t want to do any roadtrip activities. But Massimo wouldn’t give up–he was determined to see Elena’s smile return.
It took another thirty minutes before Massimo spotted the perfect place. Without a word, he adjusted their course and headed to the advertised drive–in movie theater. Elena didn’t comment until Massimo was pulling in the car into the designated parking spots–just more proof of how out of it Elena was today.
“What are you doing?” Elena asked,
Massimo unbuckled his seat belt. “I needed a break,” he explained simply. “There’s a deli down the street, so I figured we could watch a movie while we eat.”
“But-
“I’m going to buy the tickets and get some lunch. I’ll be right back.” Massimo left his keys in the ignition and left without another word.
On a different day, Elena felt that she would’ve loved to watch this movie. But as she ate her lunch next to Massimo and watched the story unfold on screen, she couldn’t help but draw uncomfortable parallels between the protagonist and herself.
The movie followed a waitress who was trapped in an unhappy marriage. She slowly started an emotional affair with the small town doctor–which turned into a passionate, physical affair after one shared kiss.
The kiss reminded Elena too much of the one she gave Massimo on that unforgettable banquet night.
