Chapter 215
Elena was immediately concerned by the question. Something about the man’s tone–even though she could barely hear him through all the background noise–set her on edge.
“Who is this?” Elena asked in furn. “And how did you get this number?”
The man’s voice melted into the odd, chaotic noise of a city street–was he passing the phone off to someone? Elena could vaguely make out a word or two, but she didn’t know for certain. The caller could’ve ditched the phone for all Elena knew.
Elena strained her ears. Faintly, she could hear a woman’s voice. It sounded like she was close to the caller.
Elena couldn’t recognize what the woman was saying, let alone whether Elena knew who this voice belonged to.
“Hello?” Elena called again.
There was more static on the other side. Then, without warning, the line went dead.
Elena would’ve assumed this entire experience was just the result of a mistaken number and a poor phone network on part of the mystery caller.
But the man has said her name. He very clearly asked for “Elena Vitale.”
Elena could not ignore that.
So she went downstairs, knocked once on Massimo’s office door, and entered.
Massimo was looking at something on his computer. “Yes?” he asked disinterestedly.
“I just had the strangest phone call,” Elena said.
It only took a moment for Elena to explain the entire situation. Massimo’s eyes very quickly left his computer monitor and focused on Elena’s face. As Elena talked, Massimo’s brow furrowed deeper and deeper.
“That is odd,” Massimo said. “Any idea of how this man got your number?”
Elena paused and thought about it for a moment. “My parents maybe,” she replied. “But regardless, I think this could pose a security risk.”
Elena didn’t understand much about hacking or tech spyware, but she knew that, when working for the mafia, one could never be too careful. Between the police and several mafia dons, Massimo had plenty of enemies. And it was now common knowledge that Elena Vitale worked for Massimo, the Don of All Dons.
Massimo didn’t say anything for a long moment. Then he frowned. “I don’t know about security risk, but it is worth looking into,” he finally said.
Massimo gestured to his desk. Elena took out her work phone and placed it where Massimo had pointed. “I’ll get one of my tech experts to take a look,” Massimo said.
“Thank you,” Elena said with a smile. “Hopefully it is nothing serious, but we can’t have any slip–ups.” Massimo nodded. He looked back at his computer screen and started typing away.

Elena thought she was being silently dismissed so she moved to the door.
“Elena?”
“Yes?” Elena stopped in her tracks and turned back to face her boss.
“This is your work phone, correct?” Massimo asked.
